Butch Renninger Lost Saturday Night May 1 at Port Royal Speedway
Port Royal, PA. - It seemed like every thing was normal at Port Royal Speedway Saturday night May 1. Racing was over in record time with a four division show completed by 10:15 P.M. Scott Hopple had taken the checkered flag in the Enduro feature and was still on stage in post race ceremonies. Butch Renninger stopped his car on the frontstretch having finished third. Renninger excited the crowd running one of his finest races ever. It was just like the 1970's all over again when this writer was a boy. Renninger ran three wide during the final laps and made contact with another car exiting turn four as they raced back to the checkered flag. He held his position and ended up third. He was laughing while setting in the car talking to friends and crew. And then problems set in. Renninger apparently suffered a massive heart attack while still in his race car. Emergency crews worked to save him and he was transported to the Lewistown Hospital. The call came shortly after midnight, just one day shy of his 63rd birthday. Butch Renninger is gone.
The Lord gives and takes with out explanation. Renninger was loved by many and fans hung around the race track sharing with each other about the friend they lost. A three time Semi-Late champion and 2003 Enduro Champ, Renninger loved racing and life. He left a wife, children and many who were made better just by knowing him. He won't be forgotten.
Arrangements will be released as soon as possible.
