Rain Holds Off for Shultz, Hoffman, and Lathroum to Win at Potomac Speedway

Budds Creek, Md., - July 28, 2000- The rain held off long enough for a special 25-lap feature by the Virginia Sprints this past Friday night at Potomac Speedway. Along with the Sprints, the Coors Light Pure-Streets were able to complete their 15-lap feature. Halfway through the 25-lap Budweiser Late Model feature, the rain wouldn't hold off any longer and the night of racing action ended. Jason Shultz of Chambersburg, Pa., came from a 12th place starting position to take the checkered flag in the Virginia Sprints feature event. During the post-race interview, Shultz said, "It seemed like the track came to me tonight. My car started handling pretty good. David Hoffman of Mechanicsville, Md., held on to win his second Budweiser Late Model feature win of the year. Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., picked up his third win of the season. Tommy Hitt was the M.A.R.F. Hard Charger of the race award winner. Hitt came from a 14th place starting position to finish fifth. WIX Filters sponsored the children's bike giveaway. Nine-year-old Josh Phetteplace of Clements, Md., was the lucky bike winner. Josh is a big fan of Budweiser Late Model Points Champion Jeff Pilkerton. Jerald Harris started on the pole of the 25-lap Virginia Sprints feature. Harris showed the way for the 19-car field to complete the first 12 laps. On lap 12, Jason Shultz, who started 12th, passed Doug Jones for second. Shultz then set his sights on Harris. Shultz pulled right up on Harris' rear bumper. On lap 13, Shultz made his move, going to the inside of Harris as they exited turn two. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch and into turns three and four. They came across the start-finish line side-by-side with Harris holding onto the lead. As they entered turns one and two, Harris' car drifted up the track opening up the door for Shultz. Shultz was able to make the pass to take over the lead. He went on to take the checkered flag, finishing with about a three-to-four car length advantage over second-place finisher Tim Hamlet. Jones finished third, followed by Tom Howe in fourth, and Harris in fifth. Hamlet and Jones won the heats. David Hoffman, Jackie Booth, and David Sibold battled almost three-wide for the lead in turn two at the start of the scheduled 25-lap feature. Hoffman was able to get the lead as they exited turn two. By lap three, Hoffman had about a three-to-four car length lead. A caution came out on lap five for Pat Wood who spun in turn two. On the restart, Hoffman led the way. The car on the move was the number 28 of James Adkins, Jr. Adkins, who started ninth, had worked his way up to third by lap six. A caution came out for an incident on lap eight for Wood, Brad Seibert, and Booth in turns three and four. On the restart, Hoffman led the way. Adkins made his move to take away the second place position from Sibold on lap 11. Sibold was able to hold him off. As the cars battled behind him, Hoffman was able to stretch his lead out to about a four-to-five car length advantage. On lap 14, Adkins again tried to pass Sibold. The two ran side-by-side down the backstretch. Sibold held onto the position. A caution came out on lap 15 for an incident involving Deane Guy, Harold Dorsey, Jr., and Jack Bland in turn four. On the restart, Hoffman led the way. Sibold made a bid for the lead on the inside in turns one and two. Adkins also joined in the battle. As they came around turns three and four, the yellow flag waved because the starting cone had not been removed from the track. As the field got set to go back to green flag racing, the rain began to come down steady. Lap 15 was never completed, as the race never went back to green. Hoffman was declared the race winner followed by Sibold in second, Adkins in third, Moreland in fourth, and Seibert in fifth. Moreland and Harold Dorsey, Jr. won the heats. In the 15-lap Coors Light Pure-Street Stock feature, Jamie Lathroum started on the pole and led the way as the green flag waved to complete lap one. On lap two, Dan Dotson, Joe Scaggs, and Tom Turner battled almost three-wide for second-place. Dotson won the battle for the position. As the drivers behind him fought for position, Lathroum was able to stretch his lead out to almost a straight-a-way advantage. The first of four cautions came out on lap six when Ray Morgan came to a stop on the backstretch. Lathroum led the way on the restart. Scaggs went to the inside of Dotson in turns one and two, but Dotson was able to hold him off. Lathroum again began pulling away from the rest of the field. He had about a half straight-a-way advantage when a caution came out for debris on the track. On the restart, Mike Latham challenged Dotson for second. Dotson held onto the position but then got loose in turn two. Latham was able to pass him, with Dotson falling back to fourth. He then pulled in the pits. A caution came out on lap 13 for P.J. Hatcher who came to a stop on the backstretch. On the restart, Lathroum led the way. Tom Turner challenged Latham for second. Turner powered his way out in front of Latham on the backstretch. As Lathroum went on to take the checkered flag with a three-to-four car length advantage, Bobby Tipton, Jr., also got around Latham. He then challenged Turner for second. They came across the start-finish line side-by-side to take the checkered flag. Turner held onto second by about a foot advantage. Tipton finished third, followed by Latham in fourth, and Tommy Hitt in fifth. Latham and Ray Morgan won the heats. This coming Friday night, is the $2,000 to win Cody Endicott Memorial 40 lap Budweiser Late Model feature plus the regular show. This is the 7th race in the ITSI New Millennium Super Late Model Series. Chesapeake Web Design will sponsor the racing action.
