PERRIS, CA, April 28, 2003 -- Saturday, April 26, 2003 Sprint Car Racing Association (SCRA) event was marred by a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two long time race fans of the SCRA.

Paul and Helen Bagley, were killed after being struck by an out-of-control car driven by Jack DeArmond, Jr. The accident occurred on the first lap of the B Main event. DeArmond's car began flipping shortly after the green flag had been flown and ultimately cleared the interior catch fence in the turn one area. At no time did a car enter the main grandstand area.

Paul, 74 was pronounced dead at the scene. Helen was transported to the Riverside County Regional Medical Center and died shortly after. DeArmond was also transported to the hospital and suffered a broken back and neck. DeArmond is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Fortunately, he has not suffered any praylsis from his injuries.

"Everyone at the Perris Auto Speedway is sadden by this tragic accident," said Perris Auto Speedway President Don Kazarian. "The SCRA community lost two of the giants of their sport". "We will sorely miss them".

Paul and Helen were icons within the SCRA acting as Sponsors and fundraisers for special events. Their son Jeff was lost in 1989 while driving a sprint car at Ascot Park. This Saturday May 3rd the decision has been made to run the Jeff Bagley Classic as scheduled at the Ventura Raceway. According to SCRA President Ron Shuman "The Bagley's would want us to race". "This was confirmed by some close friends of the family".

The remainder of the event has been rescheduled for July 26, 2003. The B Main is scheduled to be run starting at 6:00 PM followed by a complete SCRA show that evening.
