Ramey Rounds up ASCS Sooner Region Championship Honors

TULSA, Okla. (November 17, 2003) - Kevin Ramey of Fort Worth, TX, was the top honoree at this past Saturday night's American Sprint Car Series Sooner Region banquet at Tulsa's Marriott Southern Hills.

Ramey served early notice in the series' 2003 season opener on March 22, topping a tough 39-car field to jump into the early point lead. Ramey went on to win five of thirteen Sooner Region events en route to the title.

Finishing second in points was Norman, OK, driver Danny Jennings, who fell 108 points shy of a second consecutive series title. Jennings also received the Ronald Laney Hard Charger award for the second year in a row.

Amarillo's Derek Drown, who made his way to victory lane for the first time in ASCS competition this season, finished third in points, with fellow Texas driver Brian Harvill of Irving in fourth. Robert Sellers of Mustang, OK, rounded out the top five.

Oklahoma City's James Shoun posted a sixth place finish in points, his third top-ten finish in as many years on the ASCS Sooner Region trail. Tulsa's Roy Larkin claimed seventh, with Nick Smith of Broken Arrow in eighth and Talala's Stephanie Chappell in ninth. From Collinsville, Foster Landon claimed tenth place awards.

Six drivers received perfect attendance awards, including Ramey, Jennings, Drown, Harvill, Shoun and Larkin. Sellers won the Lowest Average Draw award, with Shoun taking the Highest Average Draw award.

The 2003 ASCS Sooner Region season consisted of thirteen events at seven different tracks. Two of the events (May 10 and July 19) were non-winged events, the first wingless events in ASCS history, while the July 12 event at Devil's Bowl Speedway was the first annual Gulf South vs. Sooner Region Shootout. 109 different drivers competed in at least one ASCS Sooner Region event this season.
