ASCS Sooner Region Tries KSP-Cowtown Double Again

TULSA, Okla. (July 21, 2008) -- The American Bank of Oklahoma tried the unprecedented KSP-Cowtown double a moth ago, only to have Mother Nature intervene on the Cowtown leg of the double.

Now, the series will try it more time with Friday night's stop at Kennedale Speedway Park followed up by Saturday night's card just across the parking lot at Cowtown Speedway, likely establishing a traveling series record for shortest overnight haul between two separate facilities.

Oklahoma City's Joe Wood, Jr., enters the unique weekend double riding a two-race ASCS Sooner Region win streak, including a triumph in the series initial appearance at Kennedale Speedway Park on June 27. Wood had posted his first career series win just two weekends earlier at Lawton.

Wood, along with Sapulpa, OK, resident Gary Taylor, is trying to make a run at the ASCS Sooner crown despite missing the season opener at Cowtown on April 5. The pair has combined to win five of nine features since then, with Taylor topping three mains along with Wood's pair of wins.

The hole may be a bit much though, as Taylor enters this weekend's double ranked third in points, just 16 markers ahead of Wood.

Taylor is 83 points off the lead pace of reigning series champion Brian McClelland of Tulsa, OK, who is bidding to become the first undisputed back-to-back champion in ASCS Sooner Region history.

McClelland holds a 35 point edge over Graham, TX, shoe Kolt Walker entering the weekend, with 18-year-old Glenpool, OK, racer Matt Covington rounding out the current top five behind Taylor and Wood.

Lawton's Michael Brown and Flower Mound, TX, contender Justin Melton will both try to crack the top five in points over the weekend as well.

The pair of Kennedale, TX, tracks are located just east of Fort Worth off I-20 Exit 442-A, then 1.7 miles southeast on Mansfield Highway, then 1.4 miles southwest on New Hope Road.

The American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Sooner Region is slated for 20 nights of racing action at ten different tracks throughout Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas in 2008.

The nation's most prominent Sprint Car sanctioning body with a dozen different Regions throughout the United States in addition to the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series, the American Sprint Car Series' (ASCS) 17th year of activity will include approximately 250 nights of racing at more than 100 different race tracks throughout 28 different states and Canada.
