Mackey Crowned ASCS Sprints on Dirt "King of Michigan"

T.J. Buffenbarger, HARTFORD, Mich. (June 30, 2006) -- Ken Mackey of Manitou Beach, MI, captured his first "King of Michigan" crown in Friday night's Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz 30-lap Summer Nationals feature event at Hartford Speedway Park.

The current ASCS Sprints on Dirt point leader, Mackey made a daring three-wide move at the start of the event to take the lead and held off 2005 "King of Michigan" winner Tim Norman to claim his first crown aboard the No. 25m Mott Motorsports/Maxim chassis. Mackey became the first driver in "King of Michigan" event history to lead every lap of the "A" Main."I've wanted to run a 360 up here for a long time, because we have been good here (at Hartford)," Mackey said in victory lane. "This (the "King of Michigan") is a race I have really wanted to win for a long time."Norman and Dustin Daggett were on the front row for the feature and raced side-by-side into turns one and two. Going through turns three and four, Mackey made a daring three-wide move and took the lead off the fourth corner.

Early favorite Brett Mann was taken out of contention early when his hood came loose and blocked his vision, bringing out the caution flag out on lap one. Mann was not a factor from that point forward and later dropped out of the event.

From there, Ben Rutan charged by Daggett and put pressure on Norman for second on lap five. After cautions for Gregg Dalman with front end problems in turn one and Mann stopping on the track, Rutan took over second from Norman and was catching Mackey when he looped the car in turn three. Rutan kept his car under power, but dropped back to fifth.

Mackey continued to extend his lead until John Gall hit the wall in turn three to bring out the caution. During the restart, Norman stayed close to Mackey and had a couple of open looks on the low side of the track, but Mackey held the position. Eventually, Mackey maneuvered through lapped traffic while Norman was boxed in. Mackey then opened up a half straightaway lead.Meanwhile, Dain Naida was charging up to the top five after starting 22nd along with 20th-starter Gary Fast. Naida was as high as fifth, but dropped back to eighth spot at the finish. Fast, a former Hartford Speedway Park champion, continued to charge and eventually finished fifth.Up front, it was all Mackey taking the win by a comfortable distance. Norman's second place performance was even more impressive, driving with a broken wrist after a shop accident that caused him to miss both Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz events last weekend. Daggett, Rutan, and Fast rounded out the top five.Norman, Allison, and Daggett won heat race events.Next weekend, the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz has a two-day weekend scheduled. Friday night, the series appears at I-96 Speedway for the second time during this season. Then on Saturday, ASCS SOD makes its first appearance in Northeast Michigan at Owendale Speedway in Owendale, MI.
