Naida Wins Wild ASCS Sprints on Dirt Winston Feature

ROTHBURY, Mich. (June 9, 2006) - Dain Naida survived to win Friday's 25-lap Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz main event at Winston Speedway. Naida avoided a pile-up at the start that moved him from 13th starting spot up to the pole position, took the lead from Joe Bares and then held off a late race surge from Brett Mann to capture the victory.

"This is awesome," said the very excited Naida in victory lane. "It's been a while since I've won one (a SOD feature). I have to thank God, my crew Dan McCarron, my new crew chief Patrick Poor and my wife Amanda."

Defending ASCS Sprints on Dirt champion and last season's winner at Winston, Tim Norman, and Bares were on the front row for the initial start. While working through turn two Norman spun in front of the field and collected eight other cars including Davey Brown, Bill Johnson, Brett Mann, and others. The red flag was displayed to clean up the crash. All of the drivers involved were able to restart.

Naida moved up to the pole for the second start, but Bares took the lead going into turn one. Then heading down the backstretch to complete the second lap, Tom Miller spun in turns three and four. O'Reilly ASCS National Tour driver Dustin Daggett did not see the caution, rode over Gary Fast's right rear wheel, and flipped hard in turn three. Daggett was uninjured. Fast went pitside to change a right rear tire and rejoined the field.

Bares led the field down for the restart, but Naida immediately put on the pressure. Going into turn three and four, Bares pushed up the racetrack and allowed Naida the preferred low lane and the lead. Naida pulled out to a sizeable advantage until the caution re-appeared for Ken Mackey and Kyle Patrick tangling in turn one. Patrick retired pitside, while Mackey rejoined the field.

Naida was strong on the restarts and could instantly open up a three car length lead before getting to the restart cone. Back in the pack, several drivers involved in the earlier pile up were working their way to the front including Brett Mann. Mann worked his way through the field, moving around Bares for the second position and setting his sights on Naida.

Mann caught the break he needed when Gregg Dalman clipped a marker tire coming off the fourth corner, broke the front end on his sprinter and crashed hard into the inside wall down the fronstretch. Dalman was uninjured, but had to retire from the event due to significant front end damage.

Mann was on Naida's back bumper for the restart, but Naida was up for the challenge. Naida pulled away from Mann on the restart and held on over the last ten laps to win the feature. Mann, Kevin Atkins, Bares, and Fast from the tail after the Daggett flip rounded out the top five.

Next week the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt presented by Victor Reinz heads to the Merritt Speedway for the first Northern Michigan appearance of the sprint cars 2006 season. For more information check out the official ASCS website at http://www.ascsracing.com
