In the first Canadian appearance of the 2002 NSRA Amsoil Tour, Craig Deaver carefully made his way to a first place finish at Sun Valley Motor Speedway in beautiful Vernon, BC. Starting outside in the third row, Deaver held that position until lap ten, when he made his way to second by getting past last year's feature winner, Michael "The Hammer" Newman.

Newman, who had worked his way through the field to second place, began losing ground after nine laps of a 35 lap main event due to a mechanical problem. When young Mike Sullivan spun out on lap 15 to bring out the yellow, Deaver made his move on the restart to take over the lead. Up to that point, Mike Basher had dominated the event and the evening by winning the Longacre Racing Products trophy dash and the Kershaw Knives heat race, finishing second in the feature. Speedy Allen Goetz made valiant efforts to take Basher but was unable and finished third with Quick Rick Brown, who set fast time with a 14.84, in fourth.

Regardless of two interruptions for rain and subsequent track drying, we were able to run all of our hot lap sessions and races on Saturday. A total of fourteen sprints showed up for the event. Chris Peterson, last year's Rookie of the Year, was unable to start the main with his #118 car due to a second broken rocker arm of the day. They were able to change out the first one that broke, but unfortunately, they only brought one spare. Car #81 driven by Darren Smith lost the bottom end in turn one of the first lap in the main, bringing out the first yellow and causing a complete restart of the race. Mike Sullivan Jr. in Car #77 had trouble on turn two killing the engine twice and then once again on the front stretch. A broken "buckley joint" (?) took him out for the night. Car # 96 driven by Don Kudrna pulled in before the finish with terminal car trouble and Car #76 threw a belt causing the car to overheat and drop some water on the track, parking him late in the race.

Mike Basher took his "Black Widow" #95 Car to the lead right away from his pole position in the 8-car inverted Amsoil Main Event. The track was quite green after the first rain and track-drying and the inside line was still pretty slick making it difficult for the fastest qualifiers to get through traffic to catch the "Black Widow". With over 40 caution laps added to the scheduled 35 event, fuel - for once - did not play a factor in the finish. Nor did the raindrops that started falling five laps from the checkers.
