Dewease, Brough, Goodwin Open SSP Season With Wins

NEWBERRYTOWN, PA (April 18, 2004) Lance Dewease raced to victory in the season opening Sprint Car race at the Susquehanna Speedway Park on Sunday evening. Meanwhile, Butch Brough topped the INEX Legends feature event, and Mike Goodwin scored the victory in an Xtreme finish for the Xtreme Enduro Stock Cars.

The 25 lap Sprint Car feature event found polesitter Darren Eash with the early lead. Dewease, who started third tracked Eash for five laps before taking command on lap six. Dewease opened a large lead by the end of the non stop event that was clocked in 7 minute 11.48 seconds. His win was worth $2500.

While Dewease was cruising to victory, all eyes were on a heated three car battle for the second position. In the end, Jeff Shepard took that spot, just ahead of Greg Hodnett and Eash. Mark Smith completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Fred Rahmer, Jimmy Siegel, Chad Layton, Donnie Kreitz Jr., and Eric Stambaugh. Heats went to Dewease and Shepard.

Brough was the third different leader in the 15 lap INEX Legends feature event and took the lead on the third lap from his fifth starting spot. While Brough maintained his spot at the front many fans were watching the charge of Jason Urso, who came from the 21st starting spot for second place. Ray Swank, Denny Rothermel, and Randy Fetterhoff completed the top five. Heats went to Swank and Brough.

The Xtreme Enduro 20 lap nightcap lived up to its name. Larry Hughes Jr. led the first 16 laps before Charlie Pensinger slipped past on lap 17. Goodwin never fell far behind the leaders, and was lurking in third place as Hughes and Pensinger swapped positions and paint several times on the final lap.
