Dear SCRA Fans,

Here's the results for SCRA's race at Jim Naylor's Ventura County Fairgrounds, Saturday night, October 1, 1994. While many predicted this track would be a "wrecking yard" for sprint cars, that allegation just hasn't become a reality. What HAS become a reality, is that some of the best wingles s sprint car racing on the west coast takes place here every time SCRA shows up to race. It kind of reminds me of the olden days at John Padjen's West Capitol Raceway in Sacramento, except our races are wingless and West Capitol ran wings.

Twenty-eight (28) cars checked in for tonight's event. Once again, SCRA's drivers gave the 3,000-plus fans in attendance their money's worth tonight. In yet another close finish, it was Rip Williams snapping Ron Shuman's three-in-a-row winning streak, by beating Shuman to Steve Vodden's checkered flag.

Close behind was Mike Kirby, Troy Cline, and polesitter, Ricky Gaunt, to round out the top five positions.

J.J. Yeley took a nasty flip during qualifying, but he was okay, and his crew was able to get his race car ready for the semi. However, J.J. was a DNF and was finished for the night.

There were several other flips during the evening, but none of the involved drivers were hurt, and all the machinery was repairable.

Both Rip Williams and Ron Shuman broke the old one-lap qualifying mark of 11.750, Shuman setting the fastest time and new track record with an 11.527 mark. Promoter Jim Naylor's track stayed tacky right to the checkered flags, the main event finishing with less than ten minutes before the11:00 p.m. curfew.

RESULTS:

TROPHY DASH - Cory Kruseman, Ron Shuman, Rip Williams, and Gary Howard.

1st HEAT - Shuman, Ron Di Donato, Graydon Cross, Mike Knopf, Mike English, Bill Andrews, and Don Tucker.

2nd HEAT - Jim Blenkarn, Bob Meli, Ricky Gaunt, Williams, Steve Ostling, Jim Giardina, and Rodney Argo.

3rd HEAT - Mike Kirby, Kruseman, Paul Hewlett, Troy Newsome, John Scott, Tracy Van Blargen, and Mark Ekberg.

4th HEAT - Howard, Troy Cline, Richard Harvey, Jr., John Abeytia, Mike Boat, and Dale Cross.

1st SEMI - Williams, Ostling, D. Cross, Argo, Boat, Giardina, Abeytia, and J.J. Yeley.

2nd SEMI - English, Newsome, Tucker, Scott, Knopf, Ekberg, and Van Blargen.

MAIN EVENT - Williams, Shuman, Kirby, Cline, Gaunt, Di Donato, Howard, Newsome, G. Cross, Blenkarn, Kruseman, Meli, Ostling, Hewlett, English, and Harvey, Jr.

NEXT SCRA RACE: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 6, 1994, AT KINGS SPEEDWAY IN HANFORD, CA.

A short footnote to tonight's event: SCRA usually runs with a companion show of dwarf cars at Ventura Raceway. One of the dwarf cars was sporting the name, "Page Jones". Track promoter and announcer Jim Naylor reminded everyone in the stands to place their thoughts with Page. Let's hope there are some signs of improvement, soon.

Best regards,

Steve Johnson, SCRA Secretary
