Rain once again was the big story this weekend. Both Friday and Saturday night area racing programs were affected one way or another.

Friday night rain washed out the 410 sprint and super sportsman double header at Williams Grove Speedway. After completing four consecutive scheduled racing events, Williams Grove was forced to cancel for the 14th time in 2003.

Rain also forced Clinton County Speedway officials to cancel there five-division racing program and as a result, the Nittany 50 for Sprint Cars will be moved to Friday, July 4th.

Then on Saturday hopes were high to get in Lincoln's Manheim Auto Auction Night. But a late afternoon thunderstorm swept through the Abbottstown area, causing minor flooding after nearly a week of daily rain showers, forcing officials to cancel the evenings racing program.

Next Saturday , June 28th, Lincoln will run the Fourth Annual Kevin Gobrecht Memorial for the 410 sprints. That show, which will include the ever-popular thundercars, will kick-off Pennsylvania Speedway which will feature eight races over the course of nine days.

PENNSYLVANIA SPEEDWEEK schedule: Lincoln Speedway (6/28), Grandview Speedway (6/29), Big Diamond Raceway (7/1), Silver Spring Speedway (7/2), Susquehanna Speedway (7/3), Williams Grove Speedway (7/4), Port Royal Speedway (7/5), and Selinsgrove Speedway (7/6).

For the fifth straight Saturday, rain cancelled the racing program at Silver Spring Speedway. Due to the numerous cancellations, Silver Spring promoter Alan Kreitzer has scheduled a special make-up race for this Wednesday night, June 25th. Sportsman and street stocks will make up the racing program. Grandstand and pit gates will open at 5:30. Warm-ups will begin at 7 and racing at 7:30.

Trail-Way Speedway was forced to cancel both it's Friday and Saturday night racing programs due to the rain. But, weather-permitting, Trail-Way was set to make-up it's Friday night 358 sprint, thundercar and street stock racing program Sunday evening, June 22nd at 7:30 PM.

Hagerstown's Winchester/Hagerstown Shootout Series was set for it's finale on Saturday night. The special late model series will now conclude on Friday night, August 15th, at 8 PM.

The touring United Racing Club sprinters also were affected by the rain as they were forced to cancel it's Saturday night URC program at the Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.

OTHER RACING ACTION:

JIM LAYTON WIRES FIELD FOR FIRST CAREER 358 SPRINT WIN

Harrisburg's Jim Layton wired the field for his first career 358 sprint win Saturday night at Selinsgrove Speedway.

With the win, the father of two-time defending track champion Chad Layton, became the eighth different winner in nine events at the Snyder County oval.

Ironically, the only driver with more than one win in 2003 at Selinsgrove is his son Chad.

Blain's Jeff Smith picked up his first win of the season when he was declared the winner of the 19-lap rain-shortened late model feature.

Selinsgrove's Kyle Bachman 2nd Annual Pro Stock 20. Bachman collected $1,000 for his fourth win of the season.

Middleburg's Joey Keister won the make up roadrunner feature from May 17, but then the regularly scheduled roadrunner feature was postponed by rain and will be rescheduled at a later date.

In 358 sprint qualifying, Millersburg's Joe Whitcomb, was transported to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville with undisclosed injuries following an accident on the first lap of his heat race. Whitcomb was listed in critical condition, according to medical center staff early Sunday morning.

As the green flag waved in the second 358 sprint heat, eighth-starting Whitcomb entered the first turn of the half-mile oval and turned sideways abruptly, flipped over, and was then struck by another competitor.

WENDELL WALLACE SCORES EXTREME PRO DIRTCAR MASTERS CLASSIC WIN

Wendell Wallace of Batesville, AR, drove to the victory in the special Xtreme Pro DirtCar Series Fifth Annual Master Classic at Cedar Lake Speedway in New Richmond, WI, Saturday night. The two-day event drew 64 late models from all over the country to compete in the special three segment race follows a similar format as to the special all star "The Winston" event held for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series ever year. And as in "The Winston" the event is a non-points race for the Extreme Series regulars.

Wallace started the first 40-lap segment from the third spot, but finished seventh. He didn't fare any better in the second 40-lap segment, and finished 11th.

With the top 12 cars from segment two advancing to the third segment, the wheel was spun and landed on the mark to invert the entire 12-car field. Wallace ended up starting on the outside front row for the final 20 lap segement. That allowed Wallace to lead all 20 laps to grab the $20,000 top prize.

Defending two-time Xtreme Pro DirtCar Champion Rick Eckert of York won the first segment by leading all 40 laps. Eckert then led for the first 36 laps of the second segment before loosing the lead to Dale McDowell with four laps to go.

The spin of the wheel to determined a full 12-car inversion for the final 20 lap segment, relagating Eckert to the 11th starting spot.

That proved to be his undoing as the track became a single-lane affair with little passing as evidenced by outside frontrow starter Wallace's flag-to-flag win.

In all, Eckert led 56 laps for his efforts earning $600 for winning the first segment, $600 for finishing second in the second segment, and then ended up with $2,100 for finishing 12th in the final segment for a grand total of $3,300.

For Wallace, who only led 20 laps, collected a whopping $20,950.

That allowed the defending Outlaw champ to close to within 51 points of Danny Lasoski in their battle for the World of Outlaws Series 25th Anniversary championship.
