Gary Wright named National 360 Sprint Car Poll "Driver of the Year" for 2003
KNOXVILLE, IOWA (December 4, 2003) - Gary Wright of Hooks, Texas, was voted the 2003 "Driver of the Year" by the National 360 Sprint Car Poll voting panel of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers. The veteran racer earned nine (9) of the twenty-two (22) first place ballots cast in the year-end poll.
Those drivers ranked second through fifth, respectively, are American Sprint Car Series (ASCS) point champion Travis Rilat of Texas, Kenny Adams of Florida, Knoxville Raceway point champion Billy Alley of Nebraska, and United Sprint Car Series (USCS) titlist Terry Gray of Tennessee. Rounding out the 'top ten' for the season are United Racing Club (URC) champion Dave Ely, Shane Stewart, Zach Chappell, Empire Super Sprints (ESS) champion Mike Lutz, and Northern Sprint Tour (NST) point champion Roger Crockett, respectively.
In addition to Wright, others receiving first place votes were Rilat (six), Adams (three), and one each for Alley, Ely, Crockett and Skagit Speedway champion Jason Solwold. Kenny Adams' car owner, the late Donn Goodson, was named the "Team of the Year" by the voting panel. Ricky Stenhouse, Jr., of Mississippi earned the "Rookie of the Year" title. Female sensation Erin Crocker of the Empire Super Sprints (ESS) won the "Wild Card Award" for her exciting sprint car performances.
Bob Newton of Hoosier Racing Tires was again voted "Builder/Manufacturer of the Year", while Bob Miller of Bob Miller Promotions and the United Racing Club (URC) received the "Promoter of the Year" honors. Editor Doug Auld of "Sprint Car & Midget" magazine earned the "Media Member of the Year" award.
The National 360 Sprint Car Poll is an annual awards program of the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum Foundation, Inc., of Knoxville, Iowa.
