Liebig Scores Wissota Win at South Dakota State Fair

Rapid City's Shane Liebig didn't even know if he'd get to race on Monday night at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron, SD. Liebig's tow rig broke down in Chamberlain, SD, and his sprinter did not arrive at the speedway until about 15 minutes before his heat race. Liebig won the heat and proceeded to dominate the 30-lap A-main.

Liebig followed early leader Dusty Ballenger and Raleigh Sandberg for the first 5 laps before Ballenger looped his #2D in turns 3 and 4. On the restart, Liebig charged around Sandberg and began to stretch out the lead. Meanwhile, Roger Rager had moved from 10th to 4th before slowing with a broken fuel pump.

As the green returned, Watertown, SD's Chuck Swenson moved to inside of Sandberg and tried to reel in Liebig. It would be to no avail, as Liebig would hold on to capture his second consecutive win at the South Dakota State Fair and first win of the year with the Wissota Sprint Tour. Swenson held off a determined charge from 13th starting Tony Norem to take second. Korey Rawstern and Steve Ballenger rounded out the fastest five spots. Heats for the 23 Wissota sprints went to Liebig, Sandberg, and Rawstern.

The next race on the 2001 Wissota Sprint Tour will be next Tuesday, August 7th at the Hibbing Raceway in Hibbing, MN. For more information contact Justin Zoch at 515-835-1171 or jzoch@gac.edu <pre> Dakota State Fair Speedway, Huron, SD Race Results
