Triumph at Road Atlanta!
Braselton, GA. (October 3, 2008) - Randy Pobst is the 2008 World Challenge GT champion! Randy and his #1 K-PAX/3R Racing Porsche 911 GT3 team finished fifth in the SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship season finale at Road Atlanta and clinched his second-consecutive Drivers' Championship. Randy needed to finish better than 26th in order to clinch his second-straight SCCA SPEED World Challenge GT Championship, regardless of where Andy Pilgrim placed. Randy qualified fifth in Thursday's session and kept himself in contention for the entire race, despite his heavy rewards weight and stiff competition. This is Randy's third GT Championship in six seasons.
"I am so very honored and fortunate to be part of the K-PAX/3R Racing Team. This championship win is a testament to their hard work and dedication to making our Porsches the best that they can be. Our cars consistently handle and race well which makes them fun to drive and competitive at every track. I was holding my breath for the first few laps until I knew we were in. Standing starts are high risk. You never know what can happen. Towards the end I ran hard to the finish. I was happy to finish fifth."
"I was so glad to have my friends and family with me for this race including my father Gene and my brother Gary and his wife Gloria. I would like to thank my personal assistant Kim Waters and my agent Mike Stahlschmidt for doing such great jobs this year. A special thank you goes to my girlfriend Robin Osborne for her constant support. I would also like to thank my personal sponsors Team Janica Racing, Prairie Hills Motorsport Club, ChaseCam, and saferacer.com for their continued support. Lastly, I would like to thank my K-PAX/3R Racing Team including our team owners Jim Haughey, Bob Raub and his wife Holly, our head engineer Will Moody, my car chief Paul Delio and my teammate Michael Galati. This team is a first-class effort and I am honored to share the championship with them."
Randy finished the season with 983 points to Andy Pilgrim's 907. Teammate Michael Galati (733) finished in fifth place. Today's race will be broadcast Wednesday, October 15 at 1 p.m. (ET) on SPEED. Randy will travel tonight for the KONI Challenge Series ST finale at Virginia International Raceway tomorrow, October 4 at 2:00 PM. Hopefully our luck will continue.
