Wittmer Tops Speed Chart in SPEED Touring Car Practice at Road Atlanta

BRASELTON, Ga. (Sept. 23, 2009) -- Canadian Kuno Wittmer was fastest in both SCCA Pro Racing SPEED World Challenge Touring Car practice sessions today at Road Atlanta, in preparation for this Friday's Toyo Tires Road Atlanta Grand Prix Presented by Dish Network. Wittmer's teammate and defending series Champion Peter Cunningham, of Milwaukee, Wis., was second fastest overall.

Driving the No. 44 Acura/RealTime/Red Line Oil Acura TSX, Wittmer had the fastest touring car today. He posted the top time of 1:34.999 (96.253 mph) in the morning session, while also pacing afternoon practice with a 1:35.361 (95.888 mph).

"My car was really hooked up," Wittmer said after practice. "The last three race weekends, the guys have done a lot of development on this car. They've really got it to suit my driving style with these tires now. That's not to say that at the beginning of the year we weren't there at all, we won races and we got close to podiums, but now we got things figured out really in my direction. I'm very pleased the team's hard work.

"Qualifying and race is still up [in the air], this was only practice. We don't want to peak too early and show everything we've got right away. There's a lot more left in these tires. I'm pretty sure the Mazdas and BMWs will be right there in qualifying."

Cunningham was fast all day in the No. 1 Acura/RealTime/Red Line Oil Acura TSX. In fact, he and Wittmer traded the top spot on several occasions. Much like Wittmer, Cunningham recorded his fastest lap during the morning session, where he turned a 1:35.103 (96.148 mph). In the afternoon session, his best lap was a 1:35.561 (95.687 mph). Cunningham is a four-time race winner at Road Atlanta.

Patrick Lindsey, of Santa Barbara, Calif., drove the No. 57 StreetUnit.com/Snapitt.com MAZDA6 to the third fastest lap in the afternoon session, with a 1:35.873 (95.376 mph).

With a time of 1:35.956 (95.293 mph), rookie Eric Foss, of Fort Worth, Texas, was the fourth quickest in his No. 75 MAZDASPEED/Stoptech/ProParts Mazda 6 during the afternoon session. James Clay, of Blacksburg, Va., was the fifth fastest this afternoon with a 1:36.157 (95.094 mph) in the No. 36 BimmerWorld/Gear Wrench BMW 328i.

Overall, Wittmer was the fastest in World Challenge Touring Car today, followed by Cunningham, Foss with a 1:35.487 (95.761 mph), Lindsey with a 1:35.719 (95.529 mph), and Pierre Kleinubing with a 1:35.862 (95.387 mph).

SPEED World Challenge Touring Car qualifying is set for 12:35 p.m. (EDT) Thursday, Sept. 24. Live timing and lap notes for both sessions are available at www.world-challenge.com.
