ASCAR Mintex Cup title contenders Mike‘ The Flying Dutchman’ Vergers and John‘ The Eliminator’ Mickel provided a nail biting finish to the first season of oval racing at Rockingham Motor Speedway. Vergers won the opening 60-lap encounter after a race long nose to tail battle with Mickel, crossing the line less than a second ahead of his rival.
The second race was once again a Vergers/ Mickel encounter, with Mickel taking the win in controversial circumstances after Vergers was disqualified for failing to make a pitstop within the allotted time. Amanda Stretton and Henry Taylor had spun off the circuit in separate incidents, causing the safety car to come onto the circuit and there was a mad dash for the Pitlane for tyres.
Vergers decided to stay out and led the race from Mickel until he was shown the black flag on lap 48 after ignoring a stop go penalty. Rain shortened the race to 52 laps and John Mickel took the chequered flag just ahead of Mark Proctor and Colin White.
