AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY PRESS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(7-12-97) Froehlich Wire to Wire in Legend Action at Auburndale Speedway by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL: Dave Froehlich led wire to wire to claim the win in the Florida Legends feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. The win marks the second visit in a row to the winners circle at the banked quarter mile track for the Loxahatchee driver. Paul Schrein, Andy Logan, Ed Brown and Jimmy Walker completed the top five finishers and all were within striking distance at the conclusion of the 25 lap contest. A strong field of cars were on hand as 32 cars attempted to make the 24 car starting field for the feature. The Late Model Sportsman 25 lap feature went to Thomas Poff. Poff, returning to action after several weeks off while repairs were made to his Monte Carlo, also went wire to wire to capture the win. Ollie Harbin and Howard O'Steen made several attempts to get by the number 51 but Poff was not to be denied the winners check. Harbin finished second followed by Jeff McCaw. Jimmy Castleberry made his first start for 1997 on the quarter mile in a new machine and came home fourth. Billy Jones rounded out the top five. Street Stock feature action saw Robert Hight post the win over a charging Westley Bass. Bass started deep in the field and worked his way to the rear bumper of Hight's number 13 with just 2 laps to go. Hight held on to the top spot and the winners check, Bass was second followed by Phillip Sorrell, Michael King and David Williamson. Jerry Wilt posted the win in the Modified Mini Stock 25 lap feature over Lee Davis. Steve Jones, Kevin Boykin and Don Ezell completed the list of top five finishers. The 15 lap Pure Stock V8 feature was won by Ted Anderson with Daniel Clough, Randy King, James Wright and Kim Scheffler-Hays giving chase. Young race fan Brent Cochran of Winter Haven was also a big winner for the night. The youngster, who must rely on his wheelchair for mobility, had a wish come true when he had his picture taken alongside the number 10 of Hays after the feature. Cochran was actually a double winner when track promoter William Martino awarded the avid race fan a special pass for the remainder of the racing season. The 4 Cylinder Pure Stock division saw a frightening crash during the heat races when Darryl Habbershaw and Chris Kingham careened into the outside wall at the start finish line. Kingham was able to restart his car and drive away. Habbershaw required the attention of track safety crews but was able to eventually climb from his car. Matthew Craig won the 15 lap feature later in the evening with Larry Chumney II challenging from the second spot. Wayne Weaver, Shawn Willaims and Bob Bennett rounded out the top five. Habbershaw finished eighth after climbing into the number three normally driven by Terry Jones. Lee Davis took the Fans Race over Big Jim Bargo and the 5.0 Mustang. Racing action continues this Saturday night with the Mid-Season Championships which award double points in all divisions. The Pro Figure 8 drivers return to action on the 29th of July along with the Kids Club and the regular divisions.
