(8-30-97) Gary Brown Wins Mini Stock 50 at Auburndale Speedway by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL-- Taking the lead on lap 33 Gary Brown went to win the 50 lap Modified Mini Stock feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. Early leader Rick Sirmans fell back to third at the finish after being passed by Brown and eventual second place finisher and fast qualifier Timmie Hunley. Hunley pressured Brown over the closing 10 laps but was unable to complete the pass. Jay Kaminski and Lee Davis completed the top five. The 25 lap Late Model Sportsman feature was won by Billy Jones. Jones was able to jump out to a near straight away advantage over Jeff McCaw, who would close the distance between himself and Jones to 10 car lengths. Ray Cuzzone overcame a collision with Dink Sullivan on the backstretch to finish third. Cuzzone's car became nearly airborne riding on the two left side tires for a short distance. Rookie of the Year contender, Tony Poff, rebounded from the hard crash he endured a week ago to finish fourth followed by Ollie Harbin. Cuzzone continues to lead the Late Model division in the championship point standings extending his lead to 44 points. Poff closes the differential between himself and second place Ollie Harbin to 31 points. Phillip Sorrell claimed the 25 lap Street Stock feature win followed by David Williamson, Robert Gullett and Tim Roark. Michael King brought his number 89 home in fifth and was able to surpass point leader Westley Bass to lead by 4 points. Sorrell's win catapulted him into the top 10 in the point standings. Bass came into the night with a 20 point advantage but apparent electrical problems sidelined the Lake Wales driver several times during the feature eventually parking the car three laps from the finish. The Powder Puff Enduro was won by Rhonda Gibson. Gibson was able to roust her way around the outside of Tammy Wood who finished second. Cynthia Hall, Alisha Storer and Tina Baker completed the top five. James Wright III claimed the win in the V8 Pure Stock feature leading a top three repeat for the second week in a row and extending his lead in the point standings for the division. Daniel Sasnett and Greg Bacon were second and third. Bob Gorsuch and Kim Scheffler-Hays rounded out the top five. Larry Chumney II won the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature over Greg Case, Gary Green, Joe Thomas and Wayne Weaver. Case was able to close to within 24 points of leader Daryl Habbershaw. Saturday night September 7th the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock division will tackle the modified road course for a special event. All regular divisions will be in action and the Racing for Kids Club will also compete. The Florida Legends series will visit on September 13th. The Pro Figure Eight machines and a special grudge match between WB32 personality Haywood Henson and lady V8 Pure Stock driver Kim Scheffler-Hays also highlight the evening on the 13th. The Late Model Sportsman division will compete in the Budwieser 50 on September 20th. An IRL show car will be on hand and register to win a pair tickets to the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Speedway to be given away during the night. The regular divisions, Street Stock, Modified Mini Stock, V8 Pure Stock and 4 Cylinder Pure Stock will also be in action.
