Auburndale Southern Pro Truck Race Report

AUBURNDALE SPEEDWAY July 31, 1999 Sloan Scores in Southern Pro Truck Event, Ware Captures First Late Model Feature Win

Auburndale, FL - Jeff Sloan held back the challenges of Butch Yoakum, as the Southern Pro Truck Series made their only visit of the 1999 season to the Auburndale Speedway. Bruce Gaskins was third ahead of Scott Bramlett, who made two charges from the tail of the pack to finish fourth. Rookie Jason Williamson completed the top five in the 50 lap contest.

Steve Ware, who had only had a third for his best run of the year, won the 25 lap Limited Late Model feature over Wendell Guy who also posted his best run of the year. Mitch Hawk Jr. and Bryan Storer both recovered from a pair of spins to finish third and fourth. Ollie Harbin brought his number 65 home fifth, the only member of the top three point leaders to finish the event. Point leader Robbie Storer dropped out after a collision which heavily damaged the right rear of his Chevy. Defending champion and second in points, Richard Elkins Jr. brought out the final caution on lap 24 with a severe oil leak which necessitated a red flag for extensive cleanup.

The 25 lap Street Stock feature saw several exciting 3 wide battles all the way around the quarter mile during the early laps. When the checkers finally flew it was Michael King claiming the win over Ron Lofquist's Ford and Billy Jones. Jeff McCaw finished fourth and Larry Chumney rounded out the top five.

Shawn Williams went wire to wire in his dominance of the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature. Jay Kaminski held on for second ahead of point leader Wayne Weaver and father and son team of Tony and Eugene Davidson who completed the top five.

Pure Stock action saw Rick Bacon outrun Jason Todd for the win in the 20 lap V8 Pure Stock feature. Point leader Greg Bacon made his way to third followed by Bob Gorsuch and Gene Dunn. Reggie Ware made his return to the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock painfully obvious to his fellow competitors as he went to victory in the 15 lap feature. Randy King was second ahead of Chuck McCoy, Matthew Craig and point leader Chris Narramore.

The Racing for Kids Club members were in action with CMA Award winning disc-jockeys Scott Wynn and Tom O'Brien of WPCV 97 Country on the PA calling the action. The Kids Club which offers the opportunity for youngsters ages 10 to 15 to compete against each other in 4 Cylinder Pure Stock type cars were sponsored by 97 Country.

Racing continues next Saturday August 7th with the Classic Car Racing Association and Dwarf Car Racing Association joining the regular lineup of Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Modified Mini Stocks, V8 Pure Stocks and 4 Cylinder Pure Stocks. The Mini Stocks will compete in Twin 25 lap features. There will be no racing for Saturday August 14th with racing instead at nearby USA International Speedway. Racing picks back up on August 21st when the Limited Late Models take center stage in the Scotty's 50. All other regular divisions will also be in action. Grandstand gates open at 5 PM and racing gets underway at 7 PM.
