Auburndale Speedway Race Results 1999-08-22

STORER WINS SCOTTY'S HARDWARE/COCA-COLA 100 By Dave Westerman

Auburndale, FL- Local driver Robbie Storer took the lead with 10 laps to go and won the Scotty's Hardware/Coca-Cola 100, Saturday night August 21st at Auburndale Speedway.

Storer started from the second spot on a damp track following a one and a half hour rain delay outside of second quick qualifier Tim Harrington. As the field took the green, a massive tangle took place as at least eight cars were damaged with Charlie Coyle and Richard Baer being eliminated from competition. Harrington took the lead on the restart with Storer in tow as the early laps were plagued with numerous cautions - one which happened on a restart that knocked out Coca Cola Series point leader Joe Winchell. Harrington continued to survive each and every restart and could easily put distance between himself and Storer. While under caution with 10 laps to go Mitch Hawk Jr. ran into the right front corner of Harrington's car cutting a tire down on the leaders car with harrington taking some "extra" action against Hawk in the infeild. Storer assumed the top spot and led the rest of the way to take the $2100 top prize and build on his local points lead as second place points man Richard Elkins Jr. did not participate. Keith Perry was the man of the night though as he qualified for the show by winning the consi, started 21st, was involved in the opening lap crash, yet still charged back to finish a close second which earned him the hard-charger bonus. Kevin Ingram battled back from several incidents to get third with fast-qualifier Greg Kaock taking fourth. Former Boston Red Sox player Mike Greenwell drove his Bud Machine to fifth despite the fact his car resembled a squashed beer can. Keith Schoonover, Pete Rodriguez, Craig Brown, Mitch Hawk and Harrington rounded out the top ten as only eight cars were running at the end.

Jason Bennett led every lap and dominated the Street Stock feature which saw caution only once when Paul Gibbs spun and hit Chuck Steele's car ripping a rear wheel and fuel cell off of Steele's machine. Michael King made a late race pass to take second from Doug Clemens with Larry Chumney fourth and point leader James Wright III claiming fifth spot.

Jay Kaminski grabbed the top spot when the leaders tangled infront of him, then held off hard charging Mike Rudder to take the Modified Mini Stock win. Rudder's second place finish, coupled with Wayne Weaver's 14th place following a blown tire, gives Rudder the point lead. Shawn Williams took third with a late charge netting Eugene Davidson fourth. Michael Seeright was fifth.

Bob Gorsuch made a late charge pay off as he pulled away from the field to win the Pure Stock V-8 feature. Point leader Greg Bacon looked to be the car to beat as he was trying to take the lead on lap two when he was hit sending him hard into the turn four wall. From that point it was a shootout but Gorsuch had the right combination as he outran Jason Todd, Johnny Vaughn, Troy Lacey and Roy Wilshire.

Hugh Williams led every lap and held off all challengers to win the Pure Stock 4 Cylinder feature. Joe Thomas made a late charge but fell short at the checker with Randy King, Mark Soule and Tim McKenzie rounding out the top five.

Racing continues this Saturday night with Limited Late Model Sportsmen, Street Stock, Modified Mini Stock, Pure Stock V8 and Pure Stock 4 cylinder divisions. Also scheduled are the Dwarf cars and the Kids Club will also compete. Gates open at 5 PM and racing starts at 7 PM.
