Morris is Top Cat in SARA Opener

Auburndale, FL- 39 cars attempted to gain a starting spot before a packed grandstand at Auburndale Speedway. Experience proved to be a necessary ingredient to a good run in the season opening SARA Key Bank and Trust Late Model Sportsman 100. Not just any experience would do if you wanted to pace the 29 car starting field, it had to be experience at winning on the tough quarter mile and Wayne Morris knew the way. Morris would take over the command of the event after fast qualifier and pole sitter Mike McCreary Jr. spun in debris deposited onto the speedway just in front of the leaders going into turn one. The right rear on McCreary's car also went down in the mishap and the early leader was done for the night.

With McCreary no longer a factor and a tough case of yellow fever plaguing the field, Morris needed to work lap traffic with precision if he wished to keep Robbie Storer, Dwayne Dempsey, Dave Dunkin and others at bay for the next 70 laps. Morris got his break when the event finally was able to stay under green long enough for lap traffic to become an issue. Morris was able to scoot past slower cars on lap 44 and put a buffer between him and second place Storer. Morris seem to have clicked his number 56 on cruise control as he would remain unchallenged for the remainder of the event and the best race of the night focused on second between Storer and Dempsey.

Following up from a win one week ago, Storer was beginning to struggle with a car whose handling was beginning to fade and a charging Dempsey was pressuring hard from behind. Dempsey never gave Storer a chance to rest over the second half of the event and the number 07 of Storer continued to be loose coming off the corners. Dempsey's pursuit amplified problems for Storer as he pushed the tires harder and harder slowing dramatically over the final 15 laps. Dempsey also appeared to have abused his tires, as he was unable to get enough grip exiting the turns to pull along side Storer.

With both cars fading fast in the second place battle Von Pope, Chip Shell, rookie Bryan Washburn and Mike Cioffi were able to close in. It was a six car freight train at the line for second through seventh with Storer hanging on for second. Dempsey was third, followed by Pope and Shell completing the top five.

In other action, the Street Stock feature saw Billy Jones pace the field for 25 laps to claim the win in the 25 lap feature. Michael King advanced to second at the finish followed by the lonely Ford of Ron Lofquist in third.

Jay Kaminski won the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature over James Wood who recovered well when his car stumbled at the opening green. Tony Elrod was third, chased by Wayne Weaver and Lee Davis.

Greg Bacon took the honors in V8 Pure Stock feature action. Brian Donahue charged from near the tail of the field to finish second. Gene Dunn, Robin O'Neil and Rick Bacon rounded out the top five.

Chris Narramore went from the back to the front to win the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature with Randy King following for second. Matthew Craig, Greg Case and Joe Thomas completed the order for the first five finishers.

The Kids Club was in action and 12 year old Charlene Lewis drove her Dodge Charger to the win in the Junior Division. Aaron Williamson, 13, piloted his Dodge Daytona to the victory in Senior Division racing.

Racing continues next Saturday night with the regular lineup of Limited Late Model, Street Stock, Modified Mini Stock, V8 Pure Stock and 4 Cylinder Pure Stock racing. The Kids Club will again be in action and an Easter Egg hunt is scheduled for the kids.
