(8-23-97) Storer Wins Late Model Feature at Auburndale Speedway By Gene Crane

Auburndale, FL--97 Bryan Storer won the 25 lap Late Model Sportsman feature Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway. The evening featured the Allison Legacy cars and the Super Mini Cup cars joining the weekly divisions. Special guests to the speedway were members of the Auto Racing Legends Club. Starting from the pole, Storer sped to the win over Don Carroll and Howard O'Steen. Bart Weatherford and Ray Cuzzone rounded out the top five. The final lap was marked with a grinding crash on the backstretch involving Robert Hight and Rookie of the Year contender Tony Poff. Poff, who is also third in the point standings, had the roof ripped off of his Monte Carlo. Both drivers were uninjured, the cars however were heavily damaged. The Allison Legacy cars visited the semi-banked quarter mile and Robby Glen scored the win over Jim France, Ron May, Mike Allen and Renny Davis. The Super Mini Cup cars spiced up the action when the number 53 of Gary Gallagher flipped upside-down and slid into the outside wall in turn two. Gallagher was uninjured in the crash and settled for eleventh after winning his heat earlier in the evening. The feature win went to Mike Rudder followed by Butch Miller, Steve Smith, Jim Klienhans and Jerry Stinson. The Street Stock division was not to be upstaged and supplied their own brand of bump and grind. Jeff Warren maintained a six car length advantage to lead every lap enroute to the win. Paul Gibbs, Steve Ware, Travis Roland and Michael King completed the top five. Point leader Westley Bass encountered problems during hot laps damaging the right rear axle. Bass would make the start for the 25 lap feature and advanced into the top 10 before being involved in one of several restart crashes on the backstretch. The most serious incident occurred during a mid-race restart when Ron Abney Jr. slammed the outside wall at the end of the backstretch heavily damaging the right side of his Monte Carlo. David Hartin won his heat and the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature. Point leader Randy Storer finished second followed by Lee Davis, Johel Chaves and Corbin Gibbs. The Mini Stocks will run a special 50 lap Labor Day Weekend race this coming Saturday night. James Wright scored another win in the V8 Pure Stock feature over Daniel Sasnett and Greg Bacon. Reggie Ware was victorious in the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock division with John Bews and Billy Standridge second and third. The point standings continue to heat up in several divisions. Westley Bass lost ground to Michael King with the spread shrinking to just 22 points in the Street Stock division. Ray Cuzzone added 20 points to his lead in the Late Model Sportsman division. The battle for the second spot tightened to 25 points although both second place Ollie Harbin and third Tony Poff both experienced difficulties during the night. Randy Storer padded his lead in the Modified Mini Stock division point standings but Lee Davis passed Don Ezell for the second spot and are separated by only 8 points. An Antique and Classic Car show will kickoff the Labor Day Special racing evening next Saturday afternoon. The Modified Mini Stocks will highlight racing with a 50 lap feature. A Ladies Enduro Powder Puff event will also be on tap. A special road course event for the Pure Stock 4 Cylinder division is scheduled on September 6th along with the Kids Club and regular divisions. September 13th will feature a special grudge match between V8 Pure Stock driver Kim Scheffler-Hays and TV32's Haywood Henson. Hays and Henson will utilize Legend cars which will also be in attendance for the final visit for the Florida Legend Series for 1997. Pro Figure Eight cars will also join the lineup with the regular weekly divisions. The Late Model Sportsman cars will run the Budweiser 50 on Saturday night September 20th. The regular weekly divisions will be in action and an IRL show car will also be present. Fans can register for a chance to win tickets to the Indy 200 at Walt Disney World Speedway to be drawn that night.
