(11-15-97) Gamble Does Double in Auburndale Speedway Action by Gene Crane Auburndale, FL- Johnny Gamble swept both Late Model and Street Stock features Saturday night at Auburndale Speedway as champions were decided in all divisions. Gamble, making a rare Late Model start, also won a Street Stock heat race earlier in the evening and led every lap in route to the Late Model win. Richard Scruggs and Ollie Harbin gave chase to finish second and third. Billy Jones was fourth and Bart Weatherford rounded out the top five. Ray Cuzzone's championship bid narrowly escaped disaster when his 97 Country Camaro developed drivetrain problems prior to the start of the feature. Cuzzone dropped from the running after 3 laps but had accumulated enough points by starting the event to capture his first Late Model crown. Ollie Harbin finished second in the points standings. Gamble started from the pole in the Street Stock feature and was unchallenged to the checkers of the 25 lap grind. Phillip Sorrell was a distant second followed by David Williamson, who also completed the season in third in the points. Ron Lofquist and Mitch Hawk followed to finish fourth and fifth in the race. Michael King, who had already clinched the points championship prior to the nights action climbed out of his number 89 during the pace laps of the feature to allow Travis Roland the chance to improve his position in the points. Roland was sixth in points trailing Robert Hight by only six markers had crashed his car during heat race competition. Westley Bass finished the points season second to King. Williamson was third followed by Keith Schoonover. The 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature saw Shawn Williams lead the open half of the race until a stuck throttle sent him careening into the outside wall in turn one. Williams was unhurt in the crash but his Pinto was heavily damaged. Keith Roggen had worked his way through traffic and took over the lead from Williams to go on to the win. Billy Joe Groover was second followed by Lee Davis, Jay Kaminski and Donnie Lockard. Randy Storer went on to claim the Mini Stock championship title with Lee Davis the runner-up. Don Ezell finishes the season third in points followed by Bobby Judah and Jay Kaminski. The 15 lap Pure Stock V8 feature began as a rough and tumble event. Dave Davis took control of the race from the drop of the green leaving the championship between Kim Scheffler-Hays and James Wright to work their way through the pack. Hays would tangle with Bob Gorsuch bringing out the caution causing both to restart from the tail of the pack. Daniel Clough made his way to second with James Wright on his rear bumper in third. Randy King was fourth, Gorsuch fifth and Hays made her way back to sixth at the finish. Hays' sixth place finish was enough to earn her the division title. Wright is second trailing by 10 points. Daniel Clough, Daniel Sasnett and Bob Gorsuch round out the seasons top five. Mark Soule jumped out front early in the 4 Cylinder Pure Stock feature and drove to the win with Doug Bowen in pursuit. John Bews Jr. moved into the top five in points with a third place feature finish. The race was stopped due to a crash on the backstretch when Fred Martin and Shane Bennett tangled exiting turn two. Martin's car hit the outside wall and safety crews assisted Martin from his car. Daryl Habbershaw clinched the championship. Greg Case was second followed by Wayne Weaver, Terry Jones and Bews. The final night of racing for the 1997 season is this Saturday November 22nd. The Pure Stock divisions will run 30 lap features along with regular division racing, Top Cops, Dwarf Cars, and the Kids Club. Several race fans in attendance will win frozen turkeys given away by ticket stub drawings. The Make A Wish raffle tickets will be drawn for prizes totaling over one thousand dollars. The 1997 Night of Champions Award Banquet is December 6th at 7 PM. Advance tickets are available from the speedway office.
