Full Moon at Auburndale.

By Larry Vergon

Auburndale, FL: The moon was full on Easter Eve, with strange happenings in most of the nine classes that competed at Auburndale Speedway on Saturday. Some of the races had the winner or runner-up decided at the stripe by a foot or less, a 4 Cyl. Pure Stock ended up on its roof, and several other strange happenings made for an exciting night of racing at the quarter mile oval.

Richard Elkins Jr. finished the 25 lap Limited Late Model Sportsman feature event third on the track, but took home first place money and points, when the cars finishing ahead of him were disqualified at technical inspection after the race. Elkins, last year's LLMS points champion, brought the No. 55 Camaro from deep in the field (17th) at the green to the top finishing spot. The race had several cautions, and a few damaged race cars, with a multi car crash early in the race. Ollie Harbin started the event in 12th, and was credited with second in his No. 65 Lumina. Robbie Storer took the green flag in 17th and drove the No. 07 Monte Carlo to third. Howard Osteen brought the No.86 Monte Carlo home fourth from a 15th starting spot, and Keith Schoonover was fifth in the No. 27 Camaro, after an early race bumping incident with another car sent him to the rear on the restart. Ray Cuzzone, in the No. 97 Grand Prix, and Elkins won their heat races.

In the 25 lap Modified Mini Stock feature, 28 cars took the green, with Mike Rudder starting the No. 0 Charger on the pole and leading every lap for the win. Kenny Hankins Jr., in the No. 9 VW Jetta, drove to second early in the race from his 7th starting spot, but was unable to catch Rudder on the green flag runs. This event was also marked by several caution flags, but several long green stretches saw several cars moving to the front. Shawn Williams started the race in 11th and finished third in his No. 73 Capri. Jay Kaminski took the green 23rd in his No. 7 Capri, and drove through the field to finish fourth, while Tony Elrod Jr. brought the 18th starting, No. 70 Daytona home in fifth. Rudder and Bob Storer in the No. 15 Shadow won their heats.

The Street Stock 25 lap feature was won by Ron Lofquist in the No. 49 Thunderbird, with 25 cars taking the green. Lofquist started the feature on the inside of the fifth row and moved up to third behind Donnie Harp in the No. 31 Monte Carlo and Rodney Davis in the No. 89 Monte Carlo. Lofquist watched Harp and Davis battling for the lead for several laps, until both drifted high in the fourth turn. Lofquist was able to stick the Ford on the inside and drove past both to take the lead, which he never relinquished. James Wright III brought the No. 56 Monte Carlo home in second after starting 11th, Wayne Lewis was third in the No. 28 Monte Carlo, Larry Chumney started 12th and brought the No 6 Monte Carlo home fourth, and Paul Gibbs rounded out the top five in his No. 2 Monte Carlo, after starting 13th. Heats were won by Michael King in the No. 96 and Lewis.

Top Cops visited Auburndale Speedway for the second time this season, and treated the children by autographing Easter Eggs at intermission. All of the eggs contained prizes of some kind, most with candy, but several of the eggs had tickets redeemable for Easter Baskets donated by the Donnie Howell in the Modified Mini Stock No. 01 and his sponsors, or plush bunnies and a $50 prize donated by the track. The Gold Shield Division Feature was won by Rick Penton of Hollywood in the No. 99. Bob Hart of Seminole was second in the No. 2, Clint Wagner of Palm Harbor was third in the No. 27, Butch Yancy was fourth in his Duneiden based No. 48, and Pam Parker Manning, of St. Petersburg, was fifth in the No. 12. Jeff Manning, from St. Petersburg, won the heat race in the No. 88. In the Cruiser Division, Billy Walker of Pinellas Park, won the feature and heat race in the No. 2. Jerry Davis, in the No. 22 from St. Pete, came in second by about 6 inches over Geoffery Monge of Sarasota in the No. 66. Rodney Tower, of St. Pete, was fourth in the No. 94, and Ricky Beasley from Sarasota was fifth in the No. 21.

The V8 Pure Stock 15 lap feature had 22 cars start the event, with a large melee in the fourth turn on the opening lap. Dustin Breeden came out of the scrum with the lead and looked to be a sure winner in the No. 80 Monte Carlo. Brian Donahue, driving his No. 3 Monte Carlo, broke loose from the pack and finally caught up with Breeden. The two ran side by side for several laps, with Donahue running the high groove, before Donahue was able to make the clean pass and take over the lead with 3 laps to go, and take his third feature win of the season. Breeden finished second, while Greg Bacon, in the No. 60 Monte Carlo, came from 16th at the start to third at the checkered flag. Fourth went to Vic Percifield in the Rugrats No. 37 Monte Carlo, and Johnny Vaughn took fifth in the No. 77 Cutlass. Heat winners were Bacon and Donahue.

Chris Narramore, in the No. 16 Charger, won his third Pure Stock 4 Cylinder feature of the season. Narramore had to come from behind in a race that had several cautions and a couple of clean ups for fluids. Timmy McKenzie put down the most fluids when he got together with another car, while running second, and sustained major front end damage to the No. 53 Charger. Theresa Craig brought her No. 52 Charger out for the feature, after getting upside down in a multi car incident on the first lap of her heat race, but Craig was only able to make a few laps before having to take the damaged race car to the infield. Randy King was second in the feature, bringing the No. 75 Charger to the front after starting well back in the field. Matt Craig was third in the No. 56 Charger, coming from the rear on the start. Billy Standridge came home fourth in the No. 89 Charger, and Mark Soule was fifth in the No. 76 Charger. Heat wins went to Standridge and King.

The Racing For Kids Club was back in action at Auburndale, with Charlene Lewis winning her second race of the season in the Junior Division. She was followed to the stripe by Sean Bass and Orrin Wright. In keeping with the Full Moon theme, young Mr. Wright looped his car in the fourth turn, probably giving Uncle Alan Sale, his Co-Rider, a near heart attack! This was the first time this writer had seen a Kids Club entry spin out. In the Senior Division, Aaron Williamson and Richie Acres were nose to tail for the win, with Williamson coming home first. Acres had to settle for second, followed by Larry McCormack and Jason Deaton, who was experiencing engine problems.

This coming Saturday, April 10th, Auburndale will be closed due to the Slim Jim All Pro Florida 200 at USA International in Lakeland. Racing action will return on April 17th with the American Trucks Series, Modified Mini Stocks, Street Stocks, Four Cylinder Pure Stocks, Pure Stock V-8's; and Super Mini Cup cars. There will be an autograph session for the American Trucks.
