Melbourne HQ driver Alan Hurren died today as a result of injuries sustained while in private testing at the Calder Park Thunderdome. Hurren, 44, was testing a Sportsman class Holden Commodore at the high-banked dome when he lost control and crashed, causing the car to burst into flame. A fire crew from the nearby drag strip put out the flames, but not before Hurren sustained burns to 85% of his body.

Hurren, whose wife worked at the Thunderdome, was a relative newcomer to the sport, and was testing the Commodore with a view to buying it and stepping up a class.

The tradgedy was the first fatality at the Dome since its opening.
