7th win for Dave Camara at Autodrome Granby Louis Bouthillier is the new "Mr. Sportsman"
GRANBY, Que., August 21, 1999-Everything was going fine for Alain Mathieu, the Sportsman track champion, last night at Autodrome Granby at the occasion of the 12th Mr. Sportsman Championship. In fact, the Ste-Sabine driver was in route for his first checkered flag of the season, a first title in this annual event and all this, in front of his major sponsor, Robert Transport. But at the very last lap of this 25-lap feature, Louis Bouthillier spoiled everything by winning his 7th feature of the season.
Ninth at the green flag, it wasn't very easy for Bouthillier despite the lack of cars. After Mathieu was able to clinch the lead on lap 9, Bouthillier had to fight very strongly with Pierre Raymond for the second spot. During more than seven laps, Raymond was able to hold on, but with five laps remaining, Bouthillier was able to get by Raymond and started to go after Mathieu. Using the outside groove, Bouthillier was able to reduce the lead margin on every lap and in the last one, he had the best on Mathieu at the start-finish line. Raymond finished third followed by Robin David and Mario Moreau.
American driver Dave Camara made another step in his attempt to clinch the Modified title for a second year in a row when his most serious contender, Steve Poirier, was forced to withdraw on lap 17.
During this 30-lap feature race slowed by eight caution flags, Camara who has now seven wins, one more than last season, had the best on Alain Boisvert, Marco Potvin, Hugues Mercier and Claude Brouillard. With his fifth place finish and Poirier's misfortune, Brouillard was able to climb in the second spot of the standings with the same amount of points as Poirier. Camara now has a lead margin of 79 points.
After, Camara went on winning a special 10-lap cash-dash for the top ten drivers in the standings. Climent Therrien with his small block, finished second followed by Hugues Mercier, Alain Boisvert and Robert Ranger.
Therrien who was the best small block driver in the 30-lap feature with a sixth place finish, was the one in the winner's circle of the 12-lap feature reserved to his category. He had the last word on Real Lafrance and Jacques Poulin. Poulin, a rookie driver, did pretty well by leading the first ten laps.
In the Late Model division, Jean-Paul Daigneault scored his second victory in a row. Last night, his victims were Eric Archambault and Daniel Messier while Stephane Michaud, the points' leader, was 8th. In the Tourism class, Andre Gauthier, the sole pick-up driver at Autodrome Granby, was able to register his second success of the season while in the 4 cylinder category, Pascal Haman was the winner.
