17th annual Eastern Townships Championship.
A second win for veteran Claude Brouillard.

GRANBY, Qué., June 8 2002--At the wheel of his Eau Labrador/Teo, Claude Brouillard from Tracy, Quebec registered his second win of the season, last Friday night at Autodrome Granby, by winning the 17th annual Eastern Townships Championship. For Brouillard, it was his first victory in this annual event and his performance assured him of a starting spot in Syracuse in October. His victims were Alain Boisvert and American driver John Scarborough who took place on the podium for the third time in three starts.

Brouillard who could not finish in the top three in his qualifying heat, took the lead on lap 19 of this 40-lap feature. On the outside, Brouillard made a slingshot pass on Boisvert between turns one and two. Boisvert never saw Brouillard coming.

Faster than everybody on the track, Brouillard was able to built a very safe lead and never had to look back. Boisvert, who was the early leader in that race, managed to finish second by resisting to the pressure of Scarborough who despite his third place finish is still the leader in the Carquest Auto Parts championship which will assure the winner $15,000 in prizes and money. He was followed by Réal Lafrance, the defending champion and Vince Queenville Jr.

Earlier in the evening, Scarborough, Kayle Robidoux and Mario Moreau were the heat winners.

Back

Alain Mathieu, the defending champion of the Sportsman division, didn't take too long to make a comeback on top. Last Friday, the Ste-Sabine driver had a perfect night with wins in his qualifying heat and in the 25-lap feature race to take the lead in the Castrol championship. In this race slowed by four yellow flags, Mathieu was able to get the first spot on lap 9 when leader Martin Michaud was forced to withdraw due to mechanical problems. He was followed by Dany Bilodeau and rookie Yannick Ledoux who had his best night since his graduation in the Sportsman division.

Stéphane Larivière, champion in the Late Model division since the past two seasons scored his second win of the season while in the 4 cylinders class, Maxime Michon made his first visit in the winner's circle.
