Press Release
On Sunday October 19, 1997 history will be made in the world of the ASA (American Speed Association). BJ McLeod, the thirteen year old racing prodigy from Wauchula, Florida will strap on his helmet, fire up his Pontiac engine and go racing with the Big Boys of the ASA.
BJ has been given the go ahead by Tom Jones, regular driver of the #0 Pontiac and twenty year veteran of the ASA, to race in the Sweet Potato 400 at Southern National Speedway in Kenley, North Carolina. This is the final race of the ASA season which features twenty races sponsored by AC Delco. The show will be aired live on TNN at 1:00 PM next Sunday.
BJ Mcleod will be fourteen next month, and besides holding a myriad of Kart championships in several states as well as nationally, has also won a Super Late Model feature at Orlando SpeedWorld's 3/8 mile high banked oval in Orlando, Florida. BJ has run several qualifying attempts in ASA races earlier this year and has just missed by a few hundreds of a second.
BJ Mcleod Motorsports intends to run at least 40% of the ASA schedule in 1998, and preparations are well underway to make that a reality. It may be a little early to make projections, but once you see BJ handle a car under race conditions, the comparisons to Jeff Gordon do come to mind.
