BRISTOL, TN - Scott Bloomquist of nearby Mooresburg, TN, re-established himself as the dominate late model dirt driver in America Saturday night with a solid victory in the Battle of Bristol at Bristol Motor Speedway - which was covered with dirt for this event.
It was Bloomquist's second victory of the week at Bristol and 80th victory of his career. He beat Steve Francis of Ashland, KY, by about four car lengths in the 60-lap United Dirt Track Racing (UDTRA) Pro DirtCars Series feature. Bloomquist also won a 30-lap feature Thursday night and the $25,000 he earned Saturday gave him $36,000 in prize money this week.
Bloomquist, the fastest qualifier and winner of the first heat race, started on the pole but was quickly passed by Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR. Moyer led laps 1-31 before Bloomquist took advantage of Moyer's trouble getting around a lapped car and grabbed the lead on lap 32. Bloomquist and Moyer battled until Francis got around Moyer for second on lap 49. Francis got alongside Bloomquist several times, but could never overtake the four-time UDTRA champion.
"This has been a great week," Bloomquist said. "Two wins at a special place like Bristol is a great feeling. The longer I ran, the better I got, but I was a dog on the restarts. I didn't lead 'em to the line (on restarts) anytime this week."
Moyer wound up third and Bill Frye was fourth. Ray Cook finished fifth, just ahead of defending champion Dale McDowell.
Francis' second-place run enabled him to trim Rick Eckert's points lead to just 139 as Eckert was 10th Saturday. Entering the three Battle of Bristol races, Eckert led Francis by 215 points. Bloomquist, who struggled early in the season, is third, 394 behind Eckert.
