Brunswick, GA - The young National Late Model Sportsman Series visited Golden Isle Speedway, in Brunswick, GA, this weekend and it was a seasoned veteran with over 500 career wins to his record who left with the victors laurels. Cecile Eunice, whose past credits include the NASCAR Busch Series, won his first ever NLMS Southern Dirt Tour event by using the experience gained over years behind the wheel of many different race cars. Eunice ran in the top five all evening, and let the "young guns" of the tour burn themselves out before he took the lead with just four laps remaining. Eunice then held of two spirited challenges from Gene Ross on restarts in the last moments to pick up the $4,000 winner's check.

The car just kept getting batter and better," Eunice said from Victory Lane. "I just took my time and tried to avoid the accidents and saved my tires. The car was a little slow on the restarts because I had harder tires to avoid blistering, but once it hooked up it went pretty good."

With his victory, Eunice becomes the fourth different winner in four races this season, and the 29th different winner in 33 National Late Model Sportsman events, which is why this series proudly calls itself the most competitive touring series in the Southeast. The Norman Chevrolet/Ace Pole Co. Chevrolet seemed to handle both the tricky track surface and the new right rear tire compound in stride and the "Blackshear Bandit" was able to steal the win despite not having the fastest car on the track.

Gene Ross challenged twice in the closing laps but was unable to get his Authan Construction/Scruggs Concrete Chevy alongside the flying Eunice and settled for a fine second place, his best NLMS finish this season. After starting 21st on the grid, veteran Everett Phillips worked his way through the pack to take home third place money in the Everett's Custom Services Chevrolet. The fourth finishing position went to series newcomer Bo Allen in the NCOA/Allen Brothers Welding Chevrolet who impressed many observers with his smooth driving style and excellent run from the 20th starting spot. Rounding out the top five was Henry Carter Jr in the Mimbs Farms/Sweats Portable Buildings Chevy who was forced to take a provisional to make the field and started 25th. Carter and Allen both used patience that belied their years as they worked their way into the top five.

Fast Qualifier, with a 19.246 second clocking, at an average speed of 116.907 mph, and Pole Sitter Chuck Chitty in the C&C Powerline/ J&W Engine Service Chevrolet led the opening laps until he lost a driveshaft on lap 8 and that allowed 1996 Series Champion Ivedent Lloyd to take the point. Lloyd had a great setup under his car and pulled away from the field and at times held almost a half-lap lead on the second place car of Mike Carter. But on lap 71, just four laps from the end Lloyd's engine broke a rocker arm and he was forced to retire to the pits. Carter also suffered mechanical problems shortly after being passes by Eunice and he fell off the pace.

One of the more spectacular runs of the race was turned in by Wendell Durrance who was forced to the rear of the pack during an early race melee and then passed car after car as he blazed back towards the front. On restarts he would lose four to five spots, but then would get the car under control and quickly begin advancing again. All of this was accomplished with a broken left front 'A' arm that caused the tire to dangle uselessly on its spindle. A by product of the collision that caused the suspension problem was a bent exhaust header that was pointing directly into the driver's face and eventually Durrance was forced into the pits for repairs to avoid being overcome by fumes.

The action started early with two restarts required to get a lap completed as the series drivers were obviously anxious to get back to racing after a weather imposed four week layoff. Positional battles were the rule throughout the field for the entire race, and despite the keen competition and difficult track, there were only 8 caution flags for a total of 28 laps to slow the field. Eight cars finished on the lead lap, due mainly to the fast early pace set by Lloyd as he lapped nearly half the field before his engine quit. Mac Lipthratt, who had been involved in a serious incident in the previous race at Savannah, was able to return to action after rebuilding his car and finish sixth, while Hav-A-Tampa veteran and 1996 Series points Runner-up Jimmy Sharpe took seventh. Rounding out the lead lap cars was Jimmy Lee Davis who managed to hold onto the tail end of the lead lap despite having to take on fuel with just four laps remaining.

The next stop on the National Late Model Sportsman Series, Southern Dirt Tour will be May 23 & 24 at Swainsboro Speedway in Georgia.
