Casey Smith Planning Appeal of His Official ASA Finish
19-Year-Old Has Scoring Questions after Saturday's ASA Event

AUSTIN, TX (July 20, 2004) -- After more than a month filled with off weekends, Casey Smith and the #19 team returned to action in the ASA National Series with the running of Saturday's BFGoodrich Tires 250 at Madison International Speedway (WI).

It's not yet clear where Smith finished in the event. After the race, he was scored in ninth while Monday's results showed him in 11th. The team is planning to appeal the new results.

"We can't figure out why they have us as 11th," said Smith. "They have Wade Day and Tyler Walker listed on the lead lap at the finish, but I know that they were a lap down. They got into an accident and we put them down a lap. The transponders don't lie."

Although the questionable finish order may have put a damper on the night, the 19-year-old Texan welcomed the chance to return to competition.

"I'm glad to race again," said Smith. "It feels really good because I don't like having off-time."

The off-time was a result of a lull in the ASA schedule. During this time period, there have been a few changes to the series schedule and purse structure. A few teams have scaled back their involvement with the series, but there were also a few new faces at Madison as well.

"We're going to finish out the season with ASA," Smith said. "We're committed to doing the best that we can with the points. There was a little bit of a different attitude at Madison - even with the officials. I think that it's just wondering what will happen next. We had a few new guys out there as well. Rich Bickle was in the race [he finished third in his first ASA start of the season] and I've raced against him before. It's fun to race with guys like him."

It was a challenge for Smith to race with his fellow competitors since his team appeared to be down on horsepower.

"We weren't equal under the hood this weekend," Smith said. "The other guys were killing us down the straights. We've got to get to the shop to work on our engine issues. We need to know, 'Are we down on power or are other guys ahead of where they should be?' You're not supposed to do much to these engines. Our goal is to find the most power that we can within the rules. We aren't good cheaters, so we'll do it legally."

The #19 team will need to wait a little bit longer before getting to work. Their trip back to Texas from Madison was delayed when their truck broke down in Springfield, Illinois. The truck's torque converter and flywheel malfunctioned and led to severe enough damage to crack the casing of the transmission.

"We're ready to get home," Smith said. "We need to get back to work and make our car go faster."

Smith will get his next chance behind the wheel as the ASA National Series goes to Indianapolis Raceway Park on July 31st. The young driver has been at the track before and enjoys racing there.

"IRP is a fun track," Smith said. "You can run up near the fence, cut down in the corners and make up ground quickly. I'm looking forward to going there."
