Second-Generation Racers Freeman and McReynolds Shine in Hardee's Summer Shootout at Lowe's Motor Speedway

CONCORD, N.C. (July 20, 2004) - Second-generation racers John Freeman and Brandon McReynolds were among those enjoying the spoils of victory during round six of the 10-week Hardee's Summer Shootout Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Freeman, a second-generation Hardee's Summer Shootout competitor from Huntersville, N.C., emerged from a torrid four-car battle that was truly a "wing ding" to win the 20-lap Quaker Steak & Lube Thunder Roadster feature.

Freeman battled with Steve Zacharias and Michael Van Wingerden for much of the five-mile race before Ryan Zeck, who started last in the 20-car field, joined the fray. Van Wingerden was leading when the white flag was unfurled, but Freeman moved to the inside and took command in turn three. Freeman beat Van Wingerden to the stripe by less than a car length with Zeck settling for third. Zacharias was next under the flag with Chrissy Wallace, daughter of NASCAR veteran Mike Wallace, completing the top five in her Thunder Roadster debut.

McReynolds, the 13-year-old son of FOX commentator and former NASCAR crew chief Larry McReynolds, rebounded from two tough weeks to win the 20-lap feature for the Cabarrus Family Medicine Bandolero Young Guns. McReynolds, of Mooresville, N.C., started fifth in the 24-car field, took the lead on lap 12 and held off point leader Tyler Green for his second victory of the season. Green crossed the stripe second to extend his advantage in the championship chase while Jordan Penninger nipped Devon Haun for third in the division for drivers ages 12 to 15.

Tommy Pistone III of Charlotte, N.C., carried on the family-night theme as the third-generation driver recorded his first victory in the 20-lap feature for the Tom Johnson Camping Center Legends Car Pro division. Pistone started from the pole in the 21-car main event and was never seriously challenged as he beat Kyle Grissom, son of NASCAR Busch Series veteran Steve Grissom, to the stripe. Michael Wirth nipped NASCAR Busch Series title contender Kyle Busch for third-place money.

Point leader Scott Knox of Cornelius, N.C., dominated the 28-car Raceape.com Legends Car Semi-Pro division field, notching his second consecutive victory. Knox started ninth, took the top spot on lap seven and cruised to the checkered flag in the 20-lap event. Mike Hampton followed Knox under the checkered flag with Mark Whitley third.

Veteran Legends Car racer John Sossoman of New London, N.C., used a nifty move late in the 20-lap feature to capture his third straight victory in the Holiday Inn University Masters division. On lap 17, Sossoman ran a pick play with the lapped car of Freddie Lancaster to overtake "Captain" John Smith. Sossoman ducked low around Lancaster's No. 49 machine and into the lead while Smith took the high road and dropped to second. Pole sitter Eddie Harwell followed Sossoman and Smith across the stripe to claim show honors.

Rock Hill, S.C., resident Cole Miktuk charged to his second consecutive feature victory and took the point lead in the TopChoice for Fire Ants Bandolero Bandits division. Miktuk lined up eighth in the 24-car field and took command on lap 12. The 12-year-old racer beat Ryan Glenski and Gerald White Jr. to the checkered flag in the race that was shortened to 15 laps due to time constraints.

Bruce Benson II of Lexington, N.C., took yet another step toward the Premise Termite Elimination Bandolero Outlaws championship, notching his fourth victory in six races. Benson started eighth in the 20-lap event and steadily worked to the front, taking the lead on lap 13. Once in command, Benson cruised to victory over Artie Clever and Jason Haynes.

Concord's Rusty Drye pigged out in victory lane after winning the 15-lap Road Hawg event. Drye, who was a co-founder of the new series for strictly stock cars, prevailed in a wall-banging, barrel-destroying, fender-flying feature that started with 11 cars but finished with only seven. Gene Loden and Larry Henderson finished second and third, respectively, in a junkfest that would have made Fred Sanford proud.

Drifting, the art of controlling a car while it is sliding sideways, makes its Hardee's Summer Shootout debut during round seven on Tuesday night, July 27. Often referred to as a fishtailing ballet of burning rubber, drifting started in Japan and is spreading across the United States. Much like surfing, participants are judged on form and technique. A full slate of Legends Car, Bandolero and Thunder Roadster racing is also on the card.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing starting at 7:30. Call 1-800-455-FANS for ticket information or visit www.lowesmotorspeedway.com.
