Drivers from 4 to 45 visit victory lane during round five of Lowe's Motor Speedway's Summer Shootout Series

CONCORD, N.C. (July 8, 2003) - More than four decades separated the winners Tuesday night as 4-year-old Joe Brock and 45-year-old Clay Hair shared the victory podium during round five of the 10-week Summer Shootout Series at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

Brock of Woodruff, S.C., drove his No. 3 Dale Earnhardt Chevrolet replica to victory in the inaugural Kids' Power Wheels Championship. The race, featuring 19 drivers ranging in age from 3 to 10, battled wheel-to-wheel on their battery-powered Power Wheels machines before Brock pulled away to claim the five-foot-tall trophy.

Hair, a resident of Mt. Pleasant, N.C., took the point lead in the Legends Car Masters division after dominating the 20-lap feature for drivers ages 40 and over. Hair started second in the 28-car field and was 4.5 seconds ahead of John Sossoman at the checkered flag. Jan Ingram settled for the show laurels.

Josh Waring of Concord, N.C., celebrated his 22nd birthday two days early, passing race-long leader David Ragan on the final lap to win the Legends Car Pro division feature. Ragan, son of former NASCAR Winston Cup driver Ken Ragan, settled for second in the race that was shortened to 17 laps due to time constraints. Hendrick Motorsports Busch and ARCA Series driver Kyle Busch finished third in the wild dash to the checkered flag.

Making his first start of the season, Steve Zacharias charged through the pack from the ninth starting spot to win the 20-lap feature for the sleek Thunder Roadsters. Zacharias, a former asphalt modified racer in the Northeast, beat David Sugg and Andrew Rogers to the stripe.

Point leader Patrick Conrad of Clermont, Fla., extended his advantage by winning the 20-lap feature for the Legends Car Semi-Pro division. Louis Hawkins dominated the race, but saw his victory hopes dashed by a crash during a lap 18 restart. Conrad led the final two circuits as he beat John Freeman and Danny Bopp.

Allen Stowe of Concord, N.C., went wire-to-wire in posting his second Bandolero Outlaws feature victory of the season. Ryan Jernigan finished second in the 20-lap race for drivers ages 17 and over with Christopher Morgan third under the checkered flag.

With rain washing out their main events the previous week, the Bandolero Bandits and Young Guns each ran two features.

Hunter Robbins of Montgomery, Ala., won the first Bandits feature, dominating the crash-filled race that was shortened to just eight laps due to time constraints. Jake Crum finished second while Corey Lajoie, son of two-time NASCAR Busch Series champion Randy Lajoie, took third from point leader Jordan Anderson on the final lap.

Lajoie moved up one spot in the second race, romping to his second victory in five starts. The third-generation racer from Kannapolis, N.C., started from the pole and led the entire 16-lap distance, fending off Crum who settled for the runner-up pay. Matt Martin, son of 2002 Coca-Cola 600 winner Matt Martin. rounded out the top three.

Point leader Nicholas Pope scored a clean sweep, winning both Bandolero Young Guns features. The Taylorsville, N.C., driver cruised to an easy victory in the first 20-lap event with Tyler Green, son of former NASCAR Busch Series driver Mark Green, recording his best finish of the season in second. Phillip Gill was third in the first feature for drivers ages 12 to 16.

In the second 20-lap Young Guns main, Pope passed Brad Griffin with four laps remaining and cruised to the checkered flag. Griffin settled for second with Ryan Bowman third.

School Bus racing returns for round six of the 10th annual Summer Shootout Series on Tuesday night, July 15. Three divisions of Legends Cars, three classes of Bandoleros and the extremely popular Thunder Roadsters round out the action-packed card.
