Charlotte LMS Summer Shootout summary 2003-06-24

CONCORD, N.C. (June 24, 2003) - Radio and television was the theme for round three of the 10th annual Summer Shootout Series Tuesday night at Lowe's Motor Speedway as local radio personality Mr. Bill won the wild-and-wacky School Bus race and FOX commentator Jeff Hammond topped the NASCAR Celebrity Grudge Match.

Utilizing skills honed during several seasons of Summer Shootout Legends Car competition, Mr. Bill, the afternoon D.J. on radio station WRFX 99.7 The Fox, lined up third, took the lead early and was never seriously challenged in the eight-lap battle for the behemoth creations. Rozak of radio station WEND 106.5 The End settled for second with Dirty Dan the Fan third in a race that miraculously ran without a caution flag.

In their third annual NASCAR Celebrity Grudge Match, Hammond topped fellow FOX commentator Larry McReynolds in a best two-out-of-three showdown. Driving Winston Cup-style convertibles, McReynolds won the first three-lap race with Hammond topping the second. The two former Winston Cup crew chiefs traded paint early in the finale before Hammond pulled away and stopped McReynolds' winning streak at two.

The Van Wingerdens remained undefeated in the Legends Car Pro division as Michael Van Wingerden duplicated brother Thomas' accomplishments of the two previous weeks. The Huntersville, N.C., driver started second in the 24-car field and led the final six laps in the caution-filled race that was shortened due to time constraints. Thirteen-year-old Joey Logano led early and finished second with Chris Waters next under the checkered flag. ARCA and NASCAR Busch Series competitor Kyle Busch made his first Legends Car start of the season and settled for seventh after running as high as second late in the race.

David Ragan of Kannapolis, N.C., emerged from a wild scramble that saw several cars spin in turns three and four on the final lap to win the Thunder Roadster feature. Ragan started from the pole and led all but three laps en route to his first victory of the season. The race was slowed by numerous crashes and spins and was eventually shortened to 12 laps. Reggie Primus ended up second and Tom Van Wingerden was third when the dust settled.

Earlier in the day, Todd Adams predicted he would record his first career Legends Car Semi Pro division feature victory. Just like underdog Joe Namath in the 1969 Super Bowl, Adams followed through on his prediction. The Kannapolis, N.C., racer started from the pole and survived numerous challenges to win the 15-lap event. Point leader Jesse Bunnell was second under the checkered flag but was penalized for rough driving, handing the runner-up spot to Patrick Conrad. Danny Bopp rounded out the top three.

Clay Hair bounced back from a 28th finish the previous week to record his second Legends Car Masters division feature victory. The Mt. Pleasant, N.C., veteran started third in the 28-car field and led the entire 15-lap distance. Chuck Dohm settled for the runner-up honors with John Sossoman third.

Building on two straight top-10 finishes, Jordan Anderson of Columbia, S.C., started from the pole and went wire-to-wire in winning the 15-lap feature for the Bandolero Bandits. Hunter Robbins finished second and opening-week winner Jake Crum was third in the division for drivers ages 8 to 11.

Nicholas Pope of Taylorsville, N.C., started third, took the lead on lap seven and cruised to victory in the 15-lap Bandolero Young Guns main. The division for drivers ages 12 to 16 saw Devon Haun finish second with Drew Calhoun next under the checkered flag. Point leader and two-time feature winner Ryan Bowman was eliminated in an early tangle and finished 19th.

Hickory, N.C., racer Ryan Jernigan recovered from an 11th-place finish last week to win the 15-lap Bandolero Outlaws feature. Jernigan started fourth in the 13-car field, took the lead on lap two and was several car lengths in front of Allen Stowe at the stripe.

The 10th annual Summer Shootout continues Tuesday night, July 1. In addition to the regular racing divisions, a gigantic fireworks extravaganza is on tap and NASCAR Busch Series point leader David Green will participate in the NASCAR Celebrity Grudge Match. Gates open at 5 p.m. with feature racing at 7:30.
