Ben Collins set the fastest ever lap of EuroSpeedway Lausitz in a Days of Thunder race car after a frantic 20-minute qualifying session late on Saturday afternoon.

As the sun set over the massive speedway near Dresden, Collins posted the first sub-49 second lap around the two-mile tri-oval. Posting a time of 48.975 seconds after only four laps, the former British Formula Three star parked the car and watched the rest of the session from the pits, confident that it would be enough to stay on pole.

Seven cars produced sub-50 second laps, but no one could get close to Collins' time. His nearest challenger was Roland Rehfeld in the Team HTML Pontiac, who finished the session second fastest, three tenths of a second behind the pole-sitter. Less than one second separates Rehfeld in second place and Oliver Playle in eleventh.

Colin White starts tomorrow's 50-lap opening race third in his CWS Racing Chevrolet, with Andrew Kirkaldy starting alongside the Glastonbury man on the second row of the grid.

Another top-notch effort from former BriSCA F1 stock car world champion Andy Smith netted the Rochdale star fifth quickest time and a third row grid slot in the second CWS Racing Chevrolet, with Mark Proctor rounding out the top six.

The 20-minute session had only just got under way when Alejandro Lince lost control of his Deuce Racing RML Chevy out of Turn Three and hit the wall, bringing out the yellows. The Columbian failed to make the rest of the session and will start tomorrow's opening race at the back of the grid.

Ian McKellar Jr, winner at EuroSpeedway in July, also failed to make the session, having suffered extensive damage to his Torquespeed/dsi AnyDoc Chevrolet in the opening free practice session. McKellar Jr suffered a tyre blow-out into Turn Two, slamming into the wall, and will now be forced to start the first race on Sunday from sixteenth and last on the grid.
