Dirt Late Model racer dies from injuries sustained at Eldora
Shane Unger lost his life Saturday night at Mercer County Community Hospital in Coldwater, Ohio, after injuries he sustained at the Tony Stewart-owned speedway.
The DIRTcar Racing member was 35 years old and a native of Rossburg, Ohio.
The incident took place on a late-race restart during a heat race for the World 100. Unger was collected in a multi-car wreck in the third corner. He was immediately transported to a local hospital via ambulance.
An investigation into the fatal crash is underway and being led by the Darke County Coroners Office.
"The Unger family has conveyed their appreciation of the prayers and support expressed by the racing community, and requests their privacy be respected at this time," a release from DIRTcar Racing read.
