SEBRING, FLORIDA -- Florida Mini Stock Challenge Series (FMSC) driver Frank Welch was awarded victory after apparent race winner Corbin Gibbs was disqualified during post race technical inspection Sunday (Sept. 29) at Sebring International Raceway.

The Alan Jay Automotive Network Speedfest presented by APAC victory was given to Welch of N. Ft. Myers, FL in his Lifestyle Pools Mini Stock when Gibbs of Plant City, FL was disqualified for an illegal rear end.

The 30 minute race was run on a 1.85 modified road course with 23 starting Mini Stocks and victory wasn't in hand for any driver until the final ninth circuit of racing action.

Corbin took an inside line roaring into the lead during the final circuit as the top five drivers looked like all could be covered by a king size blanket as they took the checkered flag.

Lee Davis of Lakeland, FL set fast qualifying time in his Davis Auto Repair car turning the road course in 1 minute 24.433 seconds or 78.87911 mph. Davis finished sixth.

Joey Catarelli of Pinellas Park, FL driving the Pyramid car took the early for lap one and two before slipping back to second in lap three when Davis took over the top spot.

Catarelli took back the lead in lap six from Davis and was on the move, but his reign was ended when Gibbs zipped to the lead in the final ninth circuit.

Following the disqualification Welch was declared the winner followed by Catarelli and Robbie Storer of Zephyrhills, FL in his Front Wheel Drive Performance car.

Rounding out the top five were Rick Sirmans of Pinellas Park, FL and Wes Pyburn of Lakeland, FL.

Storer had to be pleased with the race outcome after falling off the early pace in lap one back to 17th after starting second, because he is now FMSC point leader with 502 points.

The top three FMSC drivers are separated by a mere 21 points with 2001 FMSC champion Welch second with 483 and Catarelli third with 481 points.

The next FMSC race will be at Bronson Motor Speedway on Oct. 12.
