14-year-old makes history at Fredericktown Raceway

FREDERICKTOWN, Mo. -- (July 20, 2003) Fourteen-year-old Jon Paul Reando made history at the Fredericktown Raceway on Sunday afternoon by becoming the youngest driver ever to win a feature in a full-bodied stock car at the track. Reando started from the pole position in the 20-lap special RAMS Mini Stock feature and lead from start to finish to place his name in the history books.

Reando is one of three young racers with the RAMS (Racing Association of Mini Stocks) that make up what the association loving refers to as the "RAMS Kids," with Reando being the youngest of the group. The other RAMS Kids are 15-year-old Mike Meyer of Sikeston and 16-year-old Wes Kintz of Piedmont. Reando, of Festus, pocketed $300 for his victory including bonus money that was on the line for the race with an additional $100 coming from Burch Fencing of Farmington and an additional $50 bonus coming from Bob Kintz of St. Louis (who added the bonus at the start of the night if one of the RAMS Kids was able to win the feature). Reando's victory also established new records for the RAMS as it was the youngster's first-ever feature win in the class as well as the association's youngest person ever to win a feature.

Bill Nickelson of DeSoto captured second place with Dave "The Wolf" Wofford of Farmington third, Wes Kintz was fourth and Marty Boyer of Potosi was fifth. They were followed by Jason Brewington of Fredericktown, Chuck White of Ironton, Chris Pettus of Park Hills, Meyer and Mike Dunlap.

Boyer won the first heat race with Rusty Voyles second and Shannon Burch third. Meyer won the second heat with Rick Ruch second and Wofford third. Ruch won the trophy dash with Boyer second and Meyer third.

In the Modified class, Joe Giesler of St. Mary continued his winning ways at the Fredericktown Raceway by once again holding off the challenge of Brent Thompson of Farmington for the victory in the feature. Kenny Kennedy of Fredericktown settled for third place with Billy "The Kid" Smith of Park Hills fourth and Nick Werner fifth. They were followed by Tommy Worley Sr. of Farmington, Casey Burch of Farmington, Scott Carron and Bruce Cortez.

Giesler won the first heat race with Kennedy second and Worley third. Thompson won the second heat race with Smith second and Carron third. Giesler aslo won the trophy dash with Thompson second and Kennedy third.

In the UMP Late Model feature, Frankie Martin of Illinois went hard to the outside to make the pass of Mike Hammerle of St. Charles on the third lap of the 25-lap feature and then held the lead for the remainder of the race to pick up the victory. Hammerle settled for second place with John Bohn of Farmington third, Kenny Rumble fourth and Dewayne Kieffer of Ste. Genevieve was fifth. They were followed by Gary Phillips, Brad Long and Brian Stephens.

Hammerle won the first heat with Kieffer second and Long third. Rumble edged Martin at the line to win the second heat with Martin second and Bohn third. Hammerle won the dash with Martin second and Bohn third. Theran Pearl of Bismarck once again pulled his #3 Pure Street into victory lane following another feature win. Brad Thurston settled for second place with Brian Montgomery third, Lenny Terrell fourth and Russell Mathews fifth. They were followed by Bill Kinney, Chris Webb, Mike Lindsey, Dustin Homan and Josh DeSpain.

Pearl won the first heat with Thurston second and Pete Koenig third. DeSpain won the second heat with Homan second and Terrell third. Homan won the dash with Thurston second and Terrell third.

Racing action at the Fredericktown Raceway will continue this Friday night when the Hobby Stock class makes it's first of two appearances at the track this season. The Hobby Stocks, the Modifieds, the RAMS Mini Stocks and the Pure Streets will be racing. The UMP Late Models will be off Friday night.
