Godley wins Legacy pole at Martinsville

Martinsville, VA (September 28, 2000)---Jay Godley of Charlotte, NC won the pole on Thursday for the Anderson Tractor-John Deere Intermedia Allison Legacy Series race on Friday at Martinsville Speedway. The Legacy Series will run a 30-lap race immediately following Friday's 3 p.m. Bud Pole qualifying for Sunday's $2,115,007 NAPA AutoCare 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race. Godley is currently leading the series' national points standing by 43 points over Mike Smith who is the defending champion of the Anderson Tractor-John Deere race at Martinsville. "We had a good lap and was good all day in practice. We just tried to lay one out there and put it in the front," said the driver of the Godley Auction Company Chevrolet. "We are leading the national points right now and just trying to stay out front and get us a little cushion." The 19-year-old Godley said racing at Martinsville will be a thrill. "We'll have all the Winston Cup guys here watching and we want to put on a good show for all the fans that come out to watch qualifying. Maybe I'll get my name out there and get noticed by somebody," he said. Brad May of Largo Fl. qualified second and Emily Harkins of Clearwater Fl. qualified third. May said his day started bad but improved "I had a couple of problems in practice, but got it going well. I didn't think I'd qualify as fast as I did but I am real happy with my time," he said. Emily also was excited about racing at Martinsville. "It means a lot. It's kind of a dream come true," said the 19-year-old who started racing at age five. Harkins was happy with her lap. "It surprised me. We got real lucky with the setup coming in and we put new tires on for qualifying and did pretty good," she said. Tickets for Friday's Bud Pole qualifying and the Anderson Tractor-John Deere race are $15 for adults with children under 12 admitted free. Saturday's tickets for the Goody's Body Pain 200 NASCAR Featherlite Modified Tour race are $30 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. Excellent reserved seats still are available for Sunday's NAPA AutoCare 500 for $40-$45. Martinsville also is offering a Family Section for the NAPA AutoCare 500 in which tickets are $40 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12. The Family Section goes on sale race morning at 7:30.
