David Roberts Becomes First Late Model Season Winner at Greenville-Pickens

GREENVILLE, SC (March 27, 2004)- A one week delay along with some early race tough luck couldn't keep Simpsonville's David Roberts out of victory lane on Saturday night at the Greenville-Pickens Speedway. The 40 lap event was delayed for one week as rain postponed the main event at the season opener on March 20. Roberts sent a message then, turning a fast time in qualifying to take the first pole of the new season. But things didn't start out nearly so well for Roberts this Saturday, as a lap 2 caution put his #18 Dodge to the back of the field after a turn 3 tangle with Rich Croley.

Roberts used the next 36 circuits to work his way back to the front, and with only 2 laps to go he was nose to tail with Gene Morgan. On lap 38, Morgan's Ford spun in lap two, as Roberts assumed the point for the first time in the race.

"I want to apologize to Gene Morgan," Roberts said after taking the checkered flag. "I got into him over between one and two. I didn't mean to, and I hope that he will forgive me."

"I wanted to win this race, real bad, to honor my father-in-law, Charlie Raines, who passed away during the winter. I have a good car that is handling great, and a very good engine. We worked hard all winter, and just hope to keep things going after this great start," said Roberts.

Liberty's Kenneth Headen came to the front and held on for a strong second place showing, with Blair Addis getting his season off to a good start with a third place finish. Tim Lollis of Easley and Anthony Anders of Greenville rounded out the top five.

Robbie Jackson of Iva took control of the 15 lap Super Charger event at the midway point to win going away. Greg Carroll of Greer was a distant second, with Dacusville's Red Ables taking third.

Joel Cox of Greenville made a return to Charger victory lane after a 2 year absence. Cox held off Zane Janelli of Greenville and Robert Horton of Greenville to score the win. Hendersonville NC's Jason Morrow was fourth, with last week's winner Billy Rowland rounding out the top five.

In the Charger II race, Jason Smith of Anderson made it two wins in two tries on the GPS oval. Smith, a newcomer to GPS, started at the back of the pack and worked his way back to the front. Ben McCall of Easley was second, with Josh Sams of Greenville placing third. Travis King and Anthony Cordell finished fourth and fifth respectfully.

In the Renegade features, first time driver Jeff Key held off Chad Hunter to become the first Renegade winner of 2004. The second Renegade event saw Jason Callopy of Easley taking the win, with Mike Mote in second.
