Porter thrills GPS crowd

GREENVILLE, SC (March 19, 2005)- Randy Porter, the GPS track champion in 1993, returned to local racing after a three-year absence, stood the near-capacity crowd on it's ear when he broke the track record on his second lap of qualifying. Porter turned the historic half-mile in 20.056 seconds, which translates to 89.749 miles an hour.

Then in the main event, Porter took an improbable route to victory.

The elite division had a terrible time getting started. Porter had started sixth due to the top fix cars being in an inverted start. The first accident left much of the field with damaged steering, and Porter was relegated to the middle of the pack for the restart.

After four caution flags flew in the first four laps. Kenneth Headen and Brad Jeter were out front in the early going. Headen managed to stay out front used the first restart to take command.

Headen kept the point until the 22nd lap, when he and Anthony Anders were involved in a racing accident and both cars slid into the first-turn wall.

That put Porter back in front, and he said he had some minor damage in the first wreck but could go strong until his tires got too hot.

"I managed to stay out of trouble all night, and it was a good, clean race," Porter said.

Roger Powell was second to Porter, with David Roberts taking third. Brad Jeter was fourth, and Brandon McCarson fifth.

Blair Addis, Darrell Durham, Jr., Mitchell Mote, Dan Vanseun, and Headen completed the top 10.

In the brand new Sportsman division, Greg Dodgens established his dominance early, and Robbie Jackson finished second. Tim Sams was third, followed by Stanley Pressley and Randy Ballew.

Chris Meinders was sixth, with Jason Morrow, Jackie Foster, Joe Satterfield and Robin Darnell rounded out the top 10.

In the Charger One main event, David Rocklein held on for the win, after having to battle early against several fast cars. Zane Jannelli finished second, with Mike Motes, Terry Thurston and John Brunz rounding out the top five.

Tony Raines was sixth, with Anthony Cordell seventh and Jamie Altop eighth. Steve Brown and Lyle Sauvola completed the top 10.

Ben McCall grabbed his first career victory in the Charger Two main, with Gary Stokes in second. Joel Cox was third and Jeff Key, Jr., fourth. Chris Black was fifth. James Johnson, Mike Hughes, Tim Crowe, Jamie Passmore, and Jimmy Henson rounded out the top 10.

Alex Guthrie started in eleventh-place, but forged ahead to win the Renegade One main event, the opening race on GPS's 2005 season. Mark Sullivan was second, with Ken Bagwell third, Jody McDonald fourth, and Shaun Keith fifth.

Charlie Trammell was sixth, with Clay McGill; Freddie Hale, Jr.; Eric Lee and Jeff Breazele completed the top 10.

Larry Scott battled a full field on Renegades in the second main event, as 22 racers took the green flag. Sammi Burgess was second, and Matt Anders was third. Matt Hall and Jonathan Guthrie were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Harold Watson was sixth, with Mike Church and Tony Alexander in seventh and eighth. Francis Owens and Brad Turner rounded out the top 10.
