HARDEEVILLE, S.C. (June 2, 2001) - Hardeeville Motor Speedway kicked off summer vacation, with a full lineup of racing festivities Saturday evening. Those picking up victories were Chris Beach in the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models, Scott Thorne in the Xtreme Stock Cars, Rick Hunter in Street Stocks, Mark Terry in Mini Stocks, Garrett Shurling and Billy Tysinger in the Legends Cars, and Poppy Colson taking the checkered flag in the newest class of racing at Hardeeville Motor Speedway, the "Lady Legends".
Shane Jenkins of Statesboro, Ga. started from the pole and led the first eight laps of the O.C. Welch Ford-Lincoln-Mercury Late Models race before Chris Beach of Hardeeville, S.C. took over the first position. The first caution flag waved shortly after the green flag, when the cars of Corey Hendrix, Steve Smith and Kenny Cranston tangled, with Cranston receiving the worst damage of the three. The second caution flag waved on lap 16 when Leland Prewitt's machine stopped on the backstretch. This allowed the field to catch up to Beach, who had already moved out to a lengthy lead. On the restart, Tommy Porter Jr. challenged Jenkins for the second position, as Beach would again stretch his lead out. Porter would finally gain position, but not in enough time to chase down Beach, who would take his fourth win in a row and fifth victory of the season.
Nine cars started the 25-lap feature event for the Xtreme Stock Cars, with Ray Smith of Early Branch, S.C. leading from the pole. Scott "The Problem Child" Thorne of Hardeeville quickly took over the lead, with the battle for first position being hotly contested. Christie Anderson, Don Dean and Thorne fought for the position, with Thorne winning the spot. Dean and Thorne had dueled in a previous outing of the Xtreme Stock Cars, which made an interesting race for position. Anderson and Dean finished in second and third positions respectively.
Rick "The Bounty" Hunter led flag-to-flag to take the 25-lap feature event in the Street Stocks division. On lap one, the caution flag waved when the car of six-time winner Ellis Huggins spun, along with Robert Myers. The second caution flag waved when the car of "Suppertime" Dopson spun. Hunter pulled out to a lengthy lead, but by the time the checkered flag waved, the second place runner of Glenn Mappus had pulled up on the rear bumper of Hunter. Hunter held Mappus off and took his second victory of the year. Mappus followed in second, with Corey Fletcher finishing in third place.
For the second week in a row, the Mini Stocks event was barely underway when the red flag was brought out for an accident in turn four. The No. 5 of Jim Hughes of Rincon, Ga. backed his car into the wall, in about the exact location of his son-in-law, Mark Terry, in last week's race. Chief Johnny Brown of Bluffton, S.C. was also taken out of contention in the lap one incident. Mark Terry returned from last week's damaging race with a new car and a new attitude. Terry took the lead from Neal Jordan on lap two and led the 12-car field the rest of the way. Stephen Moore finished second, with Hardeeville Motor Speedway newcomer Dave Wiggins from Summerville, S.C. finishing in third position.
The Legends Cars race for the Pro, Masters and Semi-Pro divisions was an exciting one, with 17 cars taking the green flag. Adam Congrove from Hilton Head Island, S.C. was on the pole and looking to capture his first career victory at the Hardeeville Motor Speedway. The first caution flag waved on lap four when the No. 28 car of Jason Colson spun in turn four. Caution number two came out on lap eight when the cars of Justin Forehand and Walter Reardon got together. On the lap following the green flag, Congrove, the leader, spun in turn four, with Kevin Eves making contact with the wall. Garrett Shurling of Ellabell, Ga. took the lead on lap 19 from Thomas Coburn III and held off Jonathan Haidon to take his first win of the year.
The hometown driver, Billy Tysinger, continues to dominate the Legends Cars Young Lions division. Tysinger picked up his fifth consecutive win in the 2001 season. The battle for second position was between Trey Carr of Evans, Ga. and Jimmy Lang of Bluffton, S.C. Carr gained position over Lang, with Louis Hawkins of North Augusta, S.C. taking home fourth place.
A newly developed division for the Hardeeville Motor Speedway took to the track for the first time Saturday evening. The "Lady Legends" debuted with Poppy Colson of Rincon, Ga. taking the first-ever victory in the series. Wanda Sondles from Johns Island, S.C. took second position, with Camala Harrop of Bluffton, S.C. finishing in third position.
