Erb's Second Win Secures Speedweek Title

May 8, 2004 Employing all of the tricks in his bag, Dennis Erb captured Saturday's Northern Allstars Late Model series feature victory at Brownstown Speedway and with it, the 2004 Indiana Dirt Late Model Speedweek championship. Erb spent the first dozen laps trying to pass Mark Barber and most of the rest battling lapped cars while keeping Barber behind him. While Barber held onto second, Steve Barnett claimed third with James Huff and Brian Shirley filling the top five.

"I kind of like it down here, it's been a good week," said Erb, who hails from Carpentersville, IL, after the race. He noted that Brownstown Speedway is a challenging track and then mentioned the effort required to compete in Indiana Speedweek. "It's a lot of hard work, you have to make sure the car's in good shape, focus and be consistent."

Erb started the 30-lap main event fourth in his Petroff Towing-sponsored C. J. Rayburn chassis. Diving to the inside, he followed Barber, the pole starter, past Mark Frazier and quickly took up the battle for the lead. While Barber ran the inside groove, Erb ran lap-after-lap trying to get around Barber's Biehle Electric machine while Frazier, Jim Curry and Huff waged their own war behind them. On the ninth circuit, Barber slipped high and opened the door for Erb to charge past on the inside.

Once in the lead, Erb established a half-straightaway advantage. But when they began negotiating packs of slower cars, Barber closed the gap. "I knew he was going to be right there," Erb said. "It was like a traffic jam. I just had to be patient and ride it out."

Although a spin by Jeff Wilson on lap 29 bunched the field, a lapped car separated Erb and Barber on the restart, and Erb quickly pulled away for a half-straightaway win. It was his second victory of the Speedweek series, following a win at Twin Cities Raceway Park on Wednesday. Friday's winner, Randy Korte fell to second in the Speedweek standings with a 13th place finish.
