St. Augustine, FL - Johnny Sauter earned his second career ASA pole position at St. Augustine Speedway Friday, establishing a track record of 16.752 seconds, 107.450 mph.
The 2001 season opener marks the second pole of his career, both of which came in just three starts with A.P. Performance Racing.
After starting on the pole and leading the first 120 laps, Sauter made his first pit stop and received a stop and go penalty, which put him at the tail end of the field. Within the next one hundred laps, Johnny had fought back to earn a spot in the top ten, but he was not done yet. By the time the checkered flag was thrown, Sauter climbed his way to a 4th place finish.
"The A.P. Plasman Group Chevrolet ran great all night long," commented Sauter. "We definitely had a car capable of winning the race, we just ran out of time."
The A.P. Performance Racing team left the first event of 2001 ASA season in third place, tied for second, in the overall standings. Johnny also took a 52-point lead in the Pat Schauer Memorial Rookie of the Year title chase.
