LM: Illiana Shootout summary 2005-07-23

Dusty Woodie wins first ever ASA Late Model Series event, takes GM Performance Parts Shootout at Illiana.

The ASA Late Model Series Presented by GM Performance Parts have invaded the Illiana (IN) Motor Speedway on Saturday July 23rd. The rescheduled Gibson Chevrolet 100 Presented by GM Performance Parts is race number six of 15 on the 2005 schedule. 36 teams have checked into the ½ mile D-shaped semi-banked paved oval, in hopes of cracking the 26-car field

After Motive Gear Qualifying set the 26-car field, the remaining 10 machines that unfortunately did not make the 100-lap main ran the first event of the evening, which was the 25-lap GM Performance Parts Shootout. Greg Nienhouse and Dusty Woodie brought the field down to chief starter, Tom Powell's green flag to begin the GM Performance Parts Shootout. Woodie edged pole sitter Nienhouse in the first corner to take the early advantage while the rest of the field settled in behind him.

Woodie would open up a huge lead early on while GM Performance Parts Shootout Points Leader, Mark Hartline got by Nienhouse for the second spot and began chasing down Woodie. Hartline slowly but surely reeled in the race long leader and they began to battle. Soon Nienhouse joined the battle and the race was on for the lead. After carefully negotiating a lapped car, Woodie opened up the advantage just a bit leaving Hartline and Nienhouse to battle for second. Woodie opened up another big lead and the Coshocton, Ohio driver would cruise to his first career series feature win!

Nienhouse edged Hartline at the stripe for second while Bob Johnson and Nick Mahlik would complete the top five. Wally Carlson, David Duckworth, and Mike Satkowiak would round out the field. Jason Setser and Troy Barnes did not answer the call for the GM Performance Parts Shootout and both called it a night!

Satkowiak, who won the last series event, the Snap-On Tools 100 at the Calhoun County (MI) Speedway back on July 2nd, destroyed his car in practice and jumped into Doug True's back-up car for the evening to maintain his season long points earned. The Kawkawlin, Michigan pilot came into the evening ninth in the season long points chase.

The Gibson Chevrolet 100 Presented by GM Performance Parts will roll out at approximately 8pm. Pat Bourdow Memorial Rookie of the Year Candidates, Jason Dietsch and Chase Austin will lead the 26-car field down to the green flag for the 100 lap feature.
