In the second race of the weekend, the Central Valley Shootout continued at Merced Speedway.

The NCMA trophy dash was four quick hard laps with Scott Holloway taking the checkered, George Terry second, Ed Amador third and Jim Janssen (who lost his tranny the evening before) taking fourth. The 25 lap main had Janssen on the pole, E. Amador outside, Terry, third, Holloway fourth and Fries rounding out the top five. The second lap found Fries spinning out in turn three. A complete restart had E. Amador in the lead, Scott Holloway up behind him.

This race looked to be a sure thing for Amador with Holloway coming on hard. While Terry and Mark Amador had their own race for third going. The second yellow came out on lap 19 when Bert Siverling hit the tires coming out of turn two, up into the wall and down again facing traffic. Everyone got around him and he left the track under "tow "power. Green came out on lap 20 and coming into turn three, Leon Holloway was run over by M. Amador on one side and Darren Thomas on the other turning him around and throwing him into the wall hard.

After the race, he stated, "all the (seat) belts worked like they're supposed to, and pull exactly like you thought they would!" Lap 23 had S. Holloway take the lead as E. Amador let up for that on instant and Holloway took the advantage and got through. Fries finished third, Thomas fourth and Terry fifth. The NCMA return to the asphalt of Altamont Raceway Park on July 13, 2002
