Maier in Command as NCRA Sprints Return to Dodge City

TOPEKA, Kan. (July 6, 2005) -- Not quite halfway through the 2005 O'Reilly/NCRA Sprint Car Series season, Garry Lee Maier has opened up a rather comfortable lead in the season championship. Maier, the 1991 NCRA 360 Sprint Car champion, has 1912 points, 262 markers ahead of C. J. Johnson's 1650 with nine points races left.

Last month was a good one for Maier as he started off with a win June 11 at Salina Speedway. The Cimarron, Kan., driver backed it up the next night by taking the checker at WaKeeney Speedway. The pair of victories were the 46th and 47th of his NCRA career, which tops the chart.

The following weekend (June 17-18) Maier was the top finishing NCRA regular overall in a co-sanctioned twin bill at Dodge City Raceway Park, won by ASCS regulars Gary Wright and Danny Jennings. Maier had good runs each night, coming home with finishes of fourth (June 17) and sixth (June 18). He added to his lead as Johnson could only manage to finish 11th and 10th. The only NCRA regular to best Maier either night was Jason Martin, who was third on June 17 and is currently fifth in points.

Saturday the O'Reilly/NCRA 360 Sprint Car Series, presetned by Hoosier Racing Tires, returns to Dodge City for a stand-alone show. Although Maier has a comfortable lead over Johnson - who is 102 points ahead of the third-place driver - several battles still loom for the remaining spots in the top 10.

Rookie points leader Preston Peebles II sits in third place overall but with only a 32-point margin over Steve King. The two-time series champion won the season opener at the Jetmore Motorplex but has been up-and-down since then.

Fifty points behind King in fifth place is Martin, who is 81 points in front of A.J. Selenke in sixth. Selenke's lead over Dennis Park (seventh) is only 15 points, while defending series champion Mike Woodruff has struggled to an eighth-place standing, a mere eight points behind Park. Derek Drown is ninth with 1335 points, only 21 behind Woodruff. J.D. Johnson sits in 10th, 35 points behind Drown.

With the consistency he's showed this season -- two wins, six top fives, seven top 10s out of seven completed shows - Maier would have to be the one to beat this weekend. In three races at his home track in Dodge City, the Cimarron, Kan., hot shoe has racked up a second, fourth and sixth. None of the NCRA regulars have won here this year as Wright picked up the other Dodge City victory back in May.
