Pauch Kicks Off Season In High Gear

New Egypt, NJ (April 3) -- Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ, was mighty glad he made New Egypt Speedway his Saturday night home as he opened the year and the new season with a big win on April 3. Pauch took the lead from 1998 champion Roger Laureno on lap 8, then held off numerous advances from Kenny Brightbill to collect the $2,500 top prize.

"I knew Kenny and Roger were back there, so I just had to put the gas down and go for it," Pauch said in victory lane.

Mark Bitner led the 26-car field down to the flag, with Laureno and Pauch quickly moving into second and third. Numerous yellow flags delayed the action before Laureno slid by Bitner on the backstretch. Pauch, driving his own #1, put on a thrilling wheel-to-wheel battle with Laureno before taking over the top spot. Brightbill swept under Laureno and looked to treat the fans to a classic one-on-one between veteran professionals, but the crafty Pauch kept his cool and came in for the victory. He was followed by Brightbill, Laureno, Bitner and Jimmy Chester, with Tom Carberry, Carmine Infante, Gary Butler, Tom Hager and Paul Rochelle III completing the top ten.

In the Sportsman division, Jimmy Harris of Somerset clinched the first win of his career in a marathon-length event. Tom Eppolite was second, Dick Robbins was third, with Buck Ward fourth and Paul Marra Sr. fifth.

Ralph Gargiulo of Brick, NJ, picked up where he left off last season with a win in the Street Stock division. Al Cheney III, Pat Conaway, John Turnure and Bill Bauma completed the top five.

An overflow crowd filled the expanded grandstands, contributing to a 50/50 drawing that netted $2,233 for the lucky winner. The Mid-State Communications Cash Dash in the Modified division was won by Roger Laureno.

This Saturday, April 10, is Wawa Food Market Night at New Egypt with events for Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies and many fan giveaways. Gates open at 2:30 p.m., with the first race going green at 5 p.m. Adult admission is $12, with children 7-12 $4 and 6 and under admitted free.
