Pauch Beats The Heat In New Egypt 50 New Egypt, NJ (July 31) -- In a hotly contested duel down to the finish, Frenchtown, NJ’s Billy Pauch fought off the persistent challenges of division point leader Kenny Brightbill to post his eighth Modified feature win Saturday night in New Egypt Speedway’s Summer Heat Wave 50-lap event.

“The crew got it hummin’ again tonight,” said Pauch, who scored his second New Egypt win in as many weeks after a brief dry spell. “I figured if we were gonna lose it, it would be in lapped traffic. But the lapped cars were pretty good tonight -- they held their line.”

Scott VanGorder held the point at the drop of the green with several cautions slowing the action in the early going. Tim Tanner Sr. took over on lap 2 with Bob Drayton moving up into second. Lap after lap of green flag racing found 17th place starter Billy Pauch working his way toward the front. After stealing second from Drayton, Pauch and Tanner raced side-by-side until lap 14, when Pauch’s inside run down the back chute put him on the point. A mixup on lap 19 brought out the caution, with Pauch lining up next to Kenny Brightbill, who’d recovered from a lap 2 mishap that put his #19 to the rear. Brightbill stayed glued to Pauch’s bumper as the pair darted through lapped traffic. The action slowed again on lap 27; Pauch and Brightbill continued to battle as Pauch made a daring pass between two lapped cars in turn #2 to protect the lead. Pauch then opened up on Brightbill with Roger Laureno battling Drayton for third. Pauch remained in front to take his eighth win of the season. Brightbill settled for second, with Laureno, Drayton and Gary Butler following.

Bob Worthington of Mt. Laurel, NJ, came from 19th to the lead on lap 16, en route to his second Sportsman feature win of the ’99 campaign. Ron John Koczon led most of the fray until a caution with five to go in the 20-lap main closed the field, allowing Worthington to make an inside charge to take the lead. “Ron John got a little high -- I was running good on the bottom,” Worthington related. George Gareis came on at the end to take second with Keith Brightbill rebounding from an early skirmish for third. Koczon and Bryant Brown finished fourth and fifth. Scott Singley was the winner of the Mid-State Communications Sportsman Cash Dash.

Taking the lead on a lap 3 restart from his fifth starting spot, Bordentown, NJ’s Billy Bauma maintained control in the Street Stock feature and fought off the challenges of Kenny Hammond through to the checker for his first win of the season. “This year hasn’t gone real well for us but this just tops it off,” Bauma stated. Hammond turned in a strong run for second, trailed by George Quinlan, Al Cheney III and Ralph Gargiulo.

AMSOIL awarded a case of synthetic lubricant to each feature winner. The 50/50 was worth $1,490 to one lucky fan.

Fans will have a chance to show who their favorite drivers are this Saturday on Banner Night. Modifieds will compete in a 358 Syracuse Qualifier; Sportsman and Street Stocks also on the bill. Gates open at 4 pm, and racing gets underway at 6:30 pm. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, and 6 and under are free.
