New Egypt, NJ (April 1) -- Picking up where he left off in 1999, defending Modified champion Billy Pauch of Frenchtown, NJ, took the checkered flag in the first 30-lap main event of the 2000 season after a rip-roaring battle with arch rival Kenny Brightbill that had the fans on their feet.

"I think the fans got their money's worth tonight," Pauch told the crowd from victory lane.

With the new Haldeman Ford pace truck leading the field, Pauch lined up fifth on the starting grid and used the inside line to take charge following a complete restart on the initial green. Brightbill quickly slipped into second as the two hotshoes swapped the high and low grooves around the speedway. As the race hit lap 10, the pair had raced into the back-markers, slicing their way through the traffic. Brightbill got the upper hand on Pauch with 12 laps in the books and Pauch maintained the chase. The raucous crowd was on its feet as the race for the lead accelerated into a two-wide battle down the backstraight. The slow-riding car of Bob Worthington forced a caution on lap 20 and Pauch spurted into the lead on the restart. Pauch held sway with Brightbill on his tail to the checker for his first win of the new season. Trailing Pauch and Brightbill at the line were Roger Laureno, Tim Tanner Jr. and Mark Bitner.

Ringoes, NJ's Ryan Godown scored his first ever win in the Sportsman division in his first regular appearance at the track. "I didn't know if they were right behind me or what. But it went real smooth out there," Godown remarked. Mickey Kessler led the early going with Godown moving to the inside lane for the lead and eventual win on the third go-round. Behind Godown at the checker were Kessler, Larry Archer, Rich Scagliotta and Donnie Kline.

Taking the lead on the second circuit, Flemington, NJ's Billy Bauer led to the final flag for his first Street Stock win of 2000. "I've got to dedicate this win to my Dad -- I know he's watching over me," Bauer said, referring to his father who died of cancer last year. George Quinlan gave Bauer a run for the money in the late stages and finished second followed by Pat Freiberger, Joe Mongeau and Kim Cooke.

John McClelland of Martinsville, NJ, led from green to checker in the Rookie Sportsman race, with Dom Buffalino Jr., John Garey, Dave Hoffman and Gene Stravinsky making up the front five in a very strong field of 15 newcomers.

The action continues this Saturday, April 8, with Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Rookies on the card. Gates open at 2 p.m., warm-ups at 4 p.m., and the first green flag drops at 5. Adult admission is $12, children 7-12 are $4, and kids 6 and under are free. For more info, call the speedway at (609) 758-1900.
